At a remote ice station in Antarctica, a team of US scientists has made an amazing discovery. They have found something buried deep within a 100-million-year-old layer of ice. Something made of metal. Led by enigmatic Lieutenant Shane Schofield, a team of crack United States Marines is sent to the station to secure this discovery for their country.

Would you try another book from Matthew Reilly and/or Sean Mangan?

I probably won't try another book from this author. The hero is more of a McGyver type rather than a credible character, & there were too many common technical errors in the action for my liking.

My gripe only applies to the audio production, & that relates to using a foreign reader for for a story set largely in Australia. After some hours of hearing our place names mis-pronounced, I am considering whether I'll stick it out to the end.
Any future Tara Moss I read will be in print.

Richard Knox has served his time, so why shouldn’t he be allowed to live wherever he wants? Yes, in the past he was a violent rapist, but he’s seen the error of his ways. Found God. Wants to leave his dark past in Newcastle behind him and make a new start. Or so he says. Detective Sergeant Logan McRae isn’t exactly thrilled to be part of the team helping Knox settle into his new Aberdeen home.

I was very pleased to find Stuart MacB's novels 'Dark Blood' & 'Close to the Bone'. Lots more wonderful dark Scots humour & abuse as well as excellent plotting. Not for the faint heated. I'm looking forward to reading the rest on the list.

For the first time in unabridged audio! A small Kansas town has turned into a killing ground. Is it a serial killer, a man with the need to destroy? Or is it a darker force, a curse upon the land? Amid golden cornfields, FBI Special Agent Pendergast discovers evil in the blood of America's heart.

Preston & Child do it again; a complex story with all their usual background of historic understanding & folklore, coupled with their amazing combined imagination. It is another which is difficult to put down once started. Highly recommended.

    Any additional comments?

I'm not trying to be precious, but this is written in very poor English & has poor continuity. It is not often I can say I preferred the movie, but it's true in this case. The book is a great disappointment.

Nicholai Hel, born in the ravages of World War I China to an aristocratic Russian mother and a mysterious German father, raised in the spiritual gardens of a Japanese Go Master, survives the destruction of Hiroshima to emerge as the world's most artful lover and its most accomplished and highly paid assassin. Genius, mystic, master of language and culture, Hel's secret is his determination to attain a rare kind of personal excellence, a state of effortless perfection: shibumi.

In spite of the dark subject & occasional violence, this story is also beautifully written. The descriptions of the background to the story & characters are most sensitively handled, & indicate the familiarity of the author with the customs & history of the countries in which it takes place. I'll probably read this again in about six months.

Although I could not see any indication of it, this is not read in English but is Scandinavian sounding.

I failed to use the 'sample' button so I suppose it was my own fault.

At first, the fireballs seemed to be nothing more than a dazzling display of lights in the sky, plunging into the deepest oceans and disappearing without trace. But when ships started sinking inexplicably and the sea-lanes became impassable, it seemed that the world was facing a threat of unprecedented proportions.

What a disappointment. Hopefully the writer of this dreadful dramatisation went on to a different career. The story is almost unrecognizable. Wyndham must be turning in his grave.

First, there was the brutal abduction and murder of two young girls. And now a third is missing, presumably gone to the same end. Detective Sergeant John Rebus, smoking and drinking too much, his own young daughter spirited away south by his disenchanted wife, is one of many policemen hunting the killer. And then the messages begin to arrive: knotted string and matchstick crosses, taunting Rebus with pieces of a puzzle only he can solve.

Jeff says: "The first in the series"
    "Ian Rankin's 'Knots & Crosses'"
    Overall

Having read several Rebus novels in no particular order, it was interesting to read an early one & get some background on the character. It is another gripping Rankin story, & displays his facility for creating credible, three dimensional characters, plus giving the reader the feeling of being on the scene, & the scenes all convincingly described without a hint of verbosity. No wonder I enjoy reading Ian Rankin's work.
