  • Christian Meditation: Entering the Mind of Christ

    • ABRIDGED (2 hrs and 32 mins)
    • By James Finley
    • Narrated By James Finley

A practice-oriented course in Christianity's unique meditation tradition, "contemplative prayer", presented by James Finley, author, teacher, and former student of Thomas Merton. Finley has been at the forefront of the Christian meditation movement for over 20 years, and in this guided "retreat", he leads listeners into their own direct experience of the heart of contemplative prayer. Includes a complete guided session on the practice of Christian meditation.

    Tom says: "Excellent meditation primer"
    "Contemplative listening at its best"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I have read Finley's book, Palace of Nowhere, and heard him speak on other audios, but this recording is very special. I felt as if Finley were personally speaking to me, not just giving me information to process in my head, but leading me into a contemplative space where I could intuit and know reality in a new way. I would recommend it to anyone who is seriously interested in the contemplative way of the Christian tradition - though I suspect that those who are Buddhist or Sufi meditators would also find a treasure here.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but I also wanted to savor it, and drag it out to last a long time.

  • The End of Illness

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 35 mins)
    • By David B. Agus
    • Narrated By Holter Graham

Can we live robustly until our last breath? Do we have to suffer from debilitating conditions and sickness? Is it possible to add more vibrant years to our lives? In The End of Illness, David B. Agus, MD, one of the world’s leading cancer doctors, researchers, and technology innovators, tackles these fundamental questions, challenging long-held wisdoms and dismantling misperceptions about what “health” means.

Amazon Customer says: "The "techie" medicine needs!"
"what a scam, what a disappointment, what a mistake"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

What a disappointment, scam, and mistake this book was. I bought it for a long road trip, hoping to obtain some real insight into the nature of disease and illness. Hour after hour, this guy sounded like a 4th rate magazine article, re-iterating again and again the same common sense notions, like, be your own medical advocate, know your medical history and that of your family. About 3 hours in, when he started talking about his genetic company, I realized that the book was, in fact, an advertisement! What a waste of a credit. I don't know anyone who I would recommend the book to.

What could David B. Agus have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

    Paid me to read it.

What didn’t you like about Holter Graham’s performance?

Performance was ok, I was just so annoyed with the book that I didn't want to give it any stars, anywhere.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    No. I didn't learn anything I didn't already know.

    Any additional comments?

This book should be clearly labeled as promoting the author's company.
