I enjoyed this book quite a bit. I was only casually familiar with Mr. Doyle's master sleuth through movies and pop culture references. That said, I had no idea what a great writer and storyteller Mr. Doyle was until I decided to get this book. Very entertaining and well narrated by Patrick Tull. I definitely recommend this book. While it's not the first in the series, it's still one of the earlier works and makes for a good introduction to the main characters, Sherlock and Mr. Watson.
My first Harry Bosch book was actually Echo Park, which I thought was great. However, I decided to start the series from book 1 - The Black Echo. To be the first in a series the character is really well developed. Mike Connelly does an amazing job not only with Bosch, but all ther other characters in the book. His descriptions are great. He provides just enough background color, detail, and complexity to take the reader along with the story without getting bogged down in too much minutia. I especially like the way he carries certain detail elements through the book which really gives it a cohesiveness and holds the plot and character development together.
This is also a great story that; very original.
Dick Hill performs very well, albeit it seems his talents are challenged by female characters. Other than that, I think he is very effective at capturing the right moods and intonations. Overall, he is enjoyable to listen to.
If you like this genre, I highly recommend this audiobook.
