I was really looking foward to this story, but it's just such a waste. Robert Langdon wakes up in a hospital with amnesia and has to outrun people who are trying to kill him. That’s what he thinks anyway. There’s twists and the enemies are not who he thinks they are, but the plot twists are so contrived. The plot its self is depressing, a mad man thinks the world is over populated and wants to wipe out a third of humanity. It just goes on and on about how overpopulated the world is and how there's no hope. There’s so much repetition in phrases and actions, it’s like he’s beating you over the head with things. Fans of the The DaVinci Code liked it because it was clever, and it was fun to see Robert Langdon put clues together and solve a puzzle. There’s too little of that here, and too much focus on why the crazy guy wants to make a plague. It’s overworked, depressing, and just not enjoyable.
There was nothing fun about it – no sense of adventure, no humor, and the characters are like cartoons. They have one trait to their personality- and its always some sort of obsession.
With half of the story being told from female characters point of view, there really should have been a woman voicing those characters. It was like the only way the narrator could represent the female characters was to make his voice some sort of false whisper, and say things more slowly. It’s like every female character was slow and had laryngitis. It was hard to give an credit to the female characters, because you could never forget that you were listening to a man trying to talk like a woman.
The moments were Robert Langdon was working something out- were exactly what fans of The DaVinci code want, but there was just too little of that and too much of an awful story.
The way the author tried to turn the plot around was just terrible. ‘Oh- you thought I was being held hostage and drugged? Because that’s the way the story was written for the first half? No! I was sick and the soldiers all dressed in black that had me in the back of a van were giving me medicine! How could you not know that?’
It's the perfect length for a quick Pendergast fix.
Pendergast is the star of the series, and of this short story. Too bad Vinny wasn't it as well.
He does Pendergast perfectly- and I can't imagine anyone else being able to pull that off.

I hope they do more of this type- the longer adventures are great- but this is a nice break in between.
Maybe someone who likes romance or young adult novels
The premise is interesting- a future society with great technology, a different alignment of states/ countries and laws regarding women and families- but it's not explored enough- it's more focused on a romance where the main character is torn between two men.
None really stood out.
Maybe - if it were produced as an adventure, yes, as a romance no.
It just seems to be set up as a seial romance novel.
good characters and plot
Anything from the Dublin Murder Squad. It's a little lighter in mood, but still a good sense of the time and the people involved.
This is a first- but he is excellent- there were a lot of male characters with different accents- and you could always tell what character was talking. He is really excellent with the accents. He also does not make all the female voices high whispers- something that I think ruins a narration. He does the wry humor of the main character perfectly and it really adds to the story.
Not exactly- but the humor of the main character kept it interesting all around.
I'm glad I started with the first in the series. I'm definitly going to listen to the rest of the set.

The characters are well developed- that's really the most enjoyable thing about the the story. You want to keep knowing the people you meet.
This was the first, but it was very good. You could always tell what character was speaking, the womens voices were not just a high whisper.

The story is good. If you liked Code Name Verity, this is another great blend of history, a characters experience, friendship - and a solid story
The narration- there's one character- the Polish girl Rose, that is so grating I had to turn it down and miss some of the dialog. It's that hard to listen too. How did anyone think that voice was sucessfull?
No. The male voices were comical- so over the top. I'm guess it's difficult to voice so many female characters and make them distinct, but I can’t believe anyone could hear that voice for Rose and not cringe.
Yes. It's a good story and it was nice to see some of the characters from Code Name Verity and follow up with where they are now. I would definitely want to see more of their story. The narrator for Verity was spectacular- it's too bad she wasn't part of this story as well. It would have been great for the continuity.
I look foward to the next story with these characters.
It's just a lifetime movie with every stereotypical female issue- mother/daughter friction, Munchausen by Proxy, cutting, mean girls, rich girl/poor girl, fat girl/ popular girl- all rolled into one sad story. But- it's at least a well put together story and it's entertaining enough that you listen to the whole thing.
The main character figures things out too slowly, but there's enough going on that you are not bored as you figure them out.
Lazy, cringe worthy. Any dialect is way overdone- all the "girls" sound like cartoon characters, and the men are ridiculous. The main character is so flat- I'm sure if it's supposed to be a reflection of the characters personality- or she just got tired in between character voices, but it doesn't help the story.
It's made to be a Lifetime movie - I'm sure Merideth Baxter will be cast as the mother and Hillary Swank as the main character, with Lindsy Lohan as the pscho little sister.
If you read Gone Girl- and liked it- you will not find this nearly as clever. If you like Lifetime Movies and feel like you haven't seen this one yet- enjoy.
Not great, but I enjoyed it as a good story and listened to it quickly.
It’s almost like he didn’t know where to end it- there were at least three scenes before the actual ending- that could have resolved everything nicely. The actual ending was satisfying.
Every old man in the story-and there’s a few- sounded like a cartoon character. A little too much on the accents. Still- you can tell all of the other characters apart well, and female voices aren’t bad- not horrible whispers like some narrators.
The chapters moved from character to character well, and there were very few slow spots.
It’s not a bad listen, but if you’ve read a lot Steven King, you’ll recognize a lot of rehash. Even some of the dialog. It’s like he tore chunks from Salem’s Lot, The Green Mile and maybe a little of The Stand –and pasted them all together, but it’s not as epic as any of those stories. You expect some repeat because it’s a follow up on Danny from The Shining, but it’s like he keeps telling the same story over and over. Not that you mind if you’re a fan, it’s a story you like- but be honest about and tie it all together instead of putting it out there and pretending it’s new. It's almost like he's too tired to write something really new.
One of the best, hits all the marks w/ great storytelling and narration.
It's not really a life changing book w/ memorable moments, but there are great moments of anticipation - it's a novel about spy’s and adventure. It’s not boring or overcomplicated in trying to figure out who’s good and who’s bad- just the right balance.
He does not go high and whisper when he does a female voice- and he's got enough range with the male characters that you are never confused about who's speaking.

It's hard to create a good spy story- I think- without it being all about technology or clichés - and this was about the characters, but there was still enough fast paced adventure to make it interesting. I'm looking foward to this being a series.

It was great to get a more in depth look at “Scorcher” in this story.

I don't know...something about gothic horror
Overall, it was a great addition to the Dublin Murder Squad series. Not as much humor as “Faithful Place”, and there were some parts of Scorchers brooding that dragged a little. The creepy mood, with the desolate house by the sea, and the family slowly going mad, was well set.
