I didn't enjoy this book as much as I thought I would. The ending was obvious to me too early on. The characters were superficial. Mr. Collins narration was often excellent, but he has a habit of making his voice go up at the end of sentences--I don't mean questions here--that drives me nuts. I tried to ignore this at first, but by the middle of the book I found myself repeating whatever he said when he did this.
A fantastic story filled with warm eccentric characters that held my attention from beginning to end. No rewinding on this one. I couldn't wait to get home from work to listen. The narration absolutely perfect. I hope there is a sequel!
I'm so glad I found this book on Audible. This is not my usual genre, but the reviews made me curious. So glad I read the reviews and got this book. Ray Porter's narration is superb. He gives each character a unique voice and will keep you glued to your iPod wondering where the story is going. I'm sure his narration is a major factor in making this story so special. If i read this book and listened to the voice in my head it just wouldn't have been the same.
Even if this is not your genre, I suggest you use your imagination and give this one a try. I, who have been so liberal in giving 5 star ratings in the past, will now be using this book to guide my rating of others!
I don't want to spoil anything but I have to say that my mouth literally dropped open at a certain point in the story. I ran over and rewound my ipod just to make sure I heard what I thought I heard. Excellent example of a classic mystery.
I really enjoyed listening to Becky's adventures. She can be maddening at times but she's always hilarious. When the book ended I felt I couldn't wait to see what would happen next, so I've got to get book two. Sophie Kinsella always delivers!
What a fantastic story! I couldn't stop listening. All of the characters were well developed. I became very worried about Bernadette and her family.I listened for hours at a time. Finally, I went to bed with my ipod and stayed up until 1 am just to hear what was going to happen. The narration was superb, right down to the singing. Every character came alive for me. Truly a unique book and unforgettable performance. I'm so glad I have it on Audible so I can listen to it again!
I'm not sure why this book would be recommended as a first listen. Part two was the beginning of the end for me. If the nonessential sex scenes had been cut, part two would probably have been 1.5 hours long as opposed to 8+ hours. The rape in part 4 was nauseating and almost unendurable. I would never have continued with this book if it wasn't for my love of Davina Porter's skills as a narrator. I have listened to many books narrated by her in the past, and I've loved every one. I still find it hard to believe that she had anything to do with this one. What a waste of her talent and my precious credit.
I almost gave this book 2 stars because I really hated it, and I mean groaning out loud hated it, about 80% of the time. By the end, however, it left such a bad taste in my mouth that I could give the story no more than 1 star. Do yourself a favor by skipping this one. You will save your time and your credit.
