  • Star Wars: The Old Republic: Revan

    • UNABRIDGED (10 hrs and 55 mins)
    • By Drew Karpyshyn
    • Narrated By Marc Thompson
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

There’s something out there: a juggernaut of evil bearing down to crush the Republic - unless one lone Jedi, shunned and reviled, can stop it. Revan: hero, traitor, conqueror, villain, savior. A Jedi who left Coruscant to defeat Mandalorians - and returned a disciple of the dark side, bent on destroying the Republic. The Jedi Council gave Revan his life back, but his memories have been erased. All that’s left are nightmares - and deep, abiding fear. What exactly happened beyond the Outer Rim? Revan can’t quite remember, yet can’t entirely forget.

Ryan says: "Did you play Knights of the Old Republic?"
"A bridge to a bridge. Don't expect something else."

As others have said, it helps a ton if you've already played Knights of the Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic II, and if you have not and plan to, this book will rightly spoil both games to some extent. If you have played one or both of these games, you will likely find the story interesting or bothering, seeing as the Star Wars lore "cannon Revan", has walked the path of redemption. That path is continued here. In sum, your Revan from the game, may or may not match the character of this Revan.

The second major thing to know about this book is that it's not meant to be a finite story, it's a bridge between two games. Knights of the Old Republic II, and Star Wars: The Old Republic, which takes place 300 years after the final chapters of this text. Thus many of the events that happen here are meant to explain events that will happen in the aforementioned MMO, SW:TOR.

Because of these points, how much you will enjoy this book is heavily based on your previous knowledge and experience with Bioware's games involving the Old Republic, and how much you care about upcoming cannon lore in SW:TOR. Even if you fit the bill, I can't guarantee you will love the story arc here.

As always, the audio entertainment value here is amazing, and Mark Thompson's performance is unrivaled as usual. The writing is decent, but feels utterly constrained. You can tell the Author was given a beginning and an end and left to stumble through making the details interesting. It starts strong and optimistic with the rise of a new Mandalore and leads up to the sullen cliff hanger ending for Bioware to ultimately pickup on later. The two parts feel diverse enough that they could have been two novels, and I think both halves might have been better for it. But I digress.

Being the gamer and all around Star Wars nerd that I am, I have to say that I appreciated the work more than most likely will, resulting in my 4/5 stars. It sets the stage nicely for my own characters progression in SW:TOR and hints that my character may come across some beloved characters from the Knights games. It pokes and prods just the right nerd buttons for me to trigger that excitement, but just barley.

If your background with the Knights games is lacking, and you don't have 80+ hours to devout to two lengthy games(or 30 minutes looking up summaries on Wookipedia) and you're still interested in the Old Republic Era of the Star Wars universe, I would recommend Deceived and Fatal Alliance over this one. They simply require less homework going in, and less possibility for confusion or failed expectations coming out.
