A Malaysian cargo ship on its way from Seattle, Washington, to China ran aground off the coast of western Alaska's Aleutian Islands on December 8, 2004, during a brutal storm, leading to one of the most incredible Coast Guard rescue missions of all time. Two Coast Guard Jayhawk helicopters lifted off immediately from Air Station Kodiak during the driving storm, in an effort to rescue the ship's 18 crew members before it broke apart and sank in the freezing waters.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

There is no changing the story; it's non-fiction! :) But the author's take on the events was too one-sided and macho for me. I can see this as a movie with a bunch of buff actors with square jaws and shaved heads.

What does Robertson Dean bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His voice is very manly, which is perfect for this book. It was a little too macho for me, but some may like it.

Why we think it’s a great listen: An all-time Audible favorite that mixes historic fiction, adventure, and romance with one of the most fascinating literary devices: time travel. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love. In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. But their blissful reunion is shattered....

I gave this book 6 of its 32 hours to get me excited about it. I like historical fiction, which is why I chose this book, but I am not too keen on romance or science fiction. The plot seemed contrived and the characters, other than the heroine, were two dimensional. I was able to anticipate most plot twists in the 6 hours I listened, but maybe there was more excitement to come later in the book; it IS 32 hours long! On the positive side, the narrator was excellent!

Libby Day was seven when her mother and two sisters were murdered in "The Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas". As her family lay dying, little Libby fled their tiny farmhouse into the freezing January snow. She lost some fingers and toes, but she survived, and famously testified that her 15-year-old brother, Ben, was the killer. Twenty-five years later, Ben sits in prison, and troubled Libby lives off the dregs of a trust created by well-wishers who've long forgotten her.

After reading Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, I was hooked on her disturbed and visceral characters and suspenseful storytelling. Dark Places is just as much of a "page turner". It will leave you pondering the characters and plot for some time.

Dellarobia Turnbow is a restless farm wife who gave up her own plans when she accidentally became pregnant at 17. Now, after a decade of domestic disharmony on a failing farm, she encounters a shocking sight: a silent, forested valley filled with what looks like a lake of fire. She can only understand it as a cautionary miracle, but it sparks a raft of other explanations from scientists, religious leaders, and the media.

    Story

The narration is perfect for the story, but the environmental message behind the plot is a little heavy handed. If you already know a lot about ecology, the revelations of the main character aren't as awe inspiring as the author would like them to be. If you are looking for your first Kingsolver book, listen to The Poisonwood Bible. It is riveting!

The Poisonwood Bible is a story told by the wife and four daughters of Nathan Price, a fierce evangelical Baptist who takes his family and mission to the Belgian Congo in 1959. They carry with them all they believe they will need from home, but soon find that all of it - from garden seeds to Scripture - is calamitously transformed on African soil.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I have a long commute to work in rush hour traffic, which was rendered ecstatically enjoyable by this audiobook. If someone stopped next to me in traffic were to peek in my car, they might catch me laughing out loud, banging the steering wheel in anger, or crying. I actually sat in the parking lot at work for a few minutes after a very sad scene to dry my eyes and recover for the day. Amazing book!

This touching and uproarious novel by author Paul Murray made everyone’s best fiction of 2010 lists, including The Washington Post, Financial Times, Village Voice, and others. Why Skippy dies and what happens next is the mystery that links the boys of Dublin’s Seabrook College (Ruprecht Van Doren, the overweight genius obsessed with string theory; Carl, the teenager drug dealer and borderline psychotic; Philip Kilfether, the basketball-playing midget) to their parents and teachers in ways that no one could have imagined.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes! This audiobook was so fun to listen to. The characters all seem familiar to me; maybe I just know a bunch of crazy people. The drama that unfolds at a Catholic boys school is a microcosm of adult life. This book challenges the listener to think about issues of religion, friendship, romance, career, and the workings of the universe. Very cool.
