Rachel Simmons is a New York Times best-selling author and the founding director of the Girls' Leadership Institute. The Curse of the Good Girl looks into the phenomenon of the glass ceiling placed on girls who attempt to live up to the standard of being "good". Simmons then shows how parents can help build girls' self-esteem and give them the strength to pursue their goals.

    Overall

This book is absolutely fantastic! I have a 12 yr old daughter who is struggling with her friendships and listening to the book helped me understand "girl culture" as I never did before. I felt like I should have been taking notes throughout the entire book. Great advice for helping my daughter and myself to become more emotionally aware and authentic in our relationships with others. I highly recommend this book!

  • The Happiness Advantage: The Seven Principles of Positive Psychology That Fuel Success and Performance at Work

Conventional wisdom holds that if we work hard we will be more successful, and if we are more successful, then we’ll be happy. If we can just find that great job, win that next promotion, lose those five pounds, happiness will follow. But recent discoveries in the field of positive psychology have shown that this formula is actually backward: Happiness fuels success, not the other way around. When we are positive, our brains become more engaged, creative, motivated, energetic, resilient, and productive at work.

I loved this book! I also saw Shawn Achor recently speak and he is truly inspiring.

"For the clueless not the introspective"
    Overall

This book seems to be aimed for those who are just beginning to look into how their own behavior affects their relationships. I have read many books, taken classes and seminars about relationships and emotional intelligence and have been in marriage counseling with my husband for 8 years and in personal therapy for even longer. The concepts presented here are for some one who believes that all of their issues are due to the other person's failings and does not recognize their own contribution to a troubled relationship. The tone of the book is not for the well informed or educated, thoughtful person, but for the "brute or bitch" who would not even be introspective enough to buy a book on improving relationships.

From the cradle to college, tell your daughters the truth about life before they believe the culture's lies. For mothers with girls newborn to eighteen, Five Conversations You Must Have with Your Daughter is simply a must-have audiobook. Youth culture expert Vicki Courtney helps moms pinpoint and prepare the discussions that should be ongoing in the formative years.

I bought this book without knowing that it should have been "5 Conversations You Must Have With Your Daughter - from a Christian Mom's Perspective". The conversations are on topics we all need to discuss with our daughters, but when the reason for "being virtuous" is because "that is God's way", I ended up fast-forwarding through that chapter. I didn't the narrator's tone of voice - it was very authoritarian and preacher-like. I'll probably not buy books narrated by this person. However, I thought the advice was good and Vicki Courtney reveals her challenges with her own children, so the reader felt like the advice came from someone who did experience the struggles that we all go through in raising our daughters.
