Always leave a little salt on the bread. Ikey Solomon's favorite saying is also his way of doing business, and in the business of thieving he's very successful indeed. Ikey's partner in crime is his mistress, the forthright Mary Abacus, until misfortune befalls them. They are parted and each must make the harsh journey from thriving nineteenth century London to the convict settlement of Van Diemen's Land.

Where does The Potato Factory rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

It's a slow starter. I almost didn't finish it several times. But, I hung in there anyway. Sometimes it feels like there's too much detail & the beginning is a hard slog.

What did you like best about this story?

The story grew on me after a while. The language was sometimes shocking, the living conditions horrible & the regard for human life minimal, but I got involved in the lives of Ikey Solomans & Mary Abacus. I wasn't even sure I wanted to finish the book but I had to find out what happened to them. I guess the very authenticity is what kept me listening in the end. And then I ended up buying all three of the novels.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Too many to choose just one.

    Any additional comments?

A tough listen. This is no love story. Gutter language, sexuality, brutality & filth. But it pertains to the story & most of it's necessary. If you like historical fiction with gritty authentic details, this is the story for you.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. Although I love Murders, Mysteries & Action books, sometimes you just need to take a break & find something homey to listen to. Debbie McComber is one of my goto authors when I'm not feeling good, when I'm wrapped in my jammies & laying on the couch. It's that mug of hot cocoa, the pat on the shoulder & your Mom's homemade soup kind of story that makes you feel good in the end, no matter what.

What did you like best about this story?

It always works out in the end. Your kids can listen with you & you won't be embarrassed. Your Granny can listen & love them. My husband doesn't like violence on tv but he can sit for hours & listen to Debbie's books without a problem. He's always calling for more.

    Any additional comments?

If you like 19 kids & counting, the Little Couple, 7th Heaven and all oldies like the shows on ME TV & Vision, these stories are for you. They tell a good story, there's rarely any violence & it always works out in the end. It may not work out like you thought, but it always works in the end.

If you could sum up So Sure of Death in three words, what would they be?

    Murder Mystery Misery

What was one of the most memorable moments of So Sure of Death?

I burst out laughing when the Trooper is invaded in his small bunk by two women & a kid. Did I mention the bunk is in a tiny soggy fishing boat that's slowly sinking into the harbour??

    Which scene was your favorite?

The Trooper, who is phobic about airplanes, riding the pontoon of a seaplane & jumping off to capture a murder suspect riding an ATV.

    Any additional comments?

A good story about small town life in the back woods of Alaska with all it's inbred problems & racial misunderstandings. The author doesn't side with either culture but treats them both with dignity, humor & realism.

What made the experience of listening to Death Angel the most enjoyable?

Barbara Rosenblat has such a way with characters & voices that you forget that it's only one woman doing the narration. I can't imagine what she would do to Fairy Tales.

What did you like best about this story?

It was a great thriller about a national icon. I listen when I work at data entry. One night I kept working until almost 4:30 AM because I couldn't shut the book down & go home . . . . I had to know!! The story had enough action to keep me interested without blowing up the world or killing everyone in town. Another great collaboration by an excellent author & truly splendid narrator.

If you could sum up A Drop of the Hard Stuff in three words, what would they be?

    A Hellova Life

What did you like best about this story?

    It's honesty. It's truthfulness. It's grittiness.

Which character – as performed by Tom Stechschulte – was your favorite?

Our Hero was the best. His struggle for sobriety made the story meaningful. His search for the truth made it worth listening to.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The scene where he comes home to find the bottle on the table. His description of the smell, the taste, the want & the need. I felt it deep in my gut.

    Any additional comments?

I know some people find the constant referral to the 12 Steps, AA & Meetings annoying but this whole story is about getting off the booze & working the Steps. None of it would've happened if the murdered man wasn't working the Steps.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes. And I liked it so much I went out & bought all the other books in the series.

If you could sum up The Fear Artist in three words, what would they be?

    Nothing but Action.

What other book might you compare The Fear Artist to and why?

I love the whole series of Poke Rafferty books & while they're similar, I don't think they can really be compared to any other series of books because they're set in such an unfamiliar place. The morals, obligations & society of the streets of Bangkok can be very alien to the educated North American. I love the action, the mystery & yes, even the brutality of this man fighting to right the wrongs done to his family, friends & acquaintances. He's a treasure especially when all the dirty money falls through his pockets into the pockets of the needy.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes. I almost did too.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I'm not sure who would be interested in this book despite the wonderful ratings it got. Did anyone actually listen to it???

What do you think your next listen will be?

Not sure but hopefully something with enough action to keep me awake.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Although the narrator tried to interject some movement with the tone of his voice, he failed. I made it through the first hour of this book with NO action other than the ordinary comings & goings of an ordinary lawyer leading an ordinary life. I've nodded off twice as I listened.

Detective Sergeant Apelu Soifua knows firsthand how cops work in the big city; he spent seven years on the beat with the San Francisco PD. There, the job was just a job. But back home on American Samoa, it’s personal. On an island, there are no strangers. Secrets may be commonly known but they’re never discussed, and solving crimes requires a certain…finesse. Here, Apelu walks the line between two cultures: Samoan versus American, native versus new.

What disappointed you about Pago Pago Tango?

The lack of action & plot really disappointed me. Maybe I'm spoiled by the worlds of 'Private', Kay Scarpetta, Temperance Brennan, Poke Rafferty & Agent Penderghast, but I'd like a little action in my Thrillers & Mysteries. Right from the start, it was a slow mover & I lost interest so many times I was nodding off over my keyboard. I finally gave up about half-way through & deleted it from my 'play list'. I really tried hard to like this new series, really I did, but as far as I'm concerned, it's a stinker.

This one is the best of the series so far!! I wasn't happy with the ending of this book so I had to buy the rest of the series to find out what happened. This book had almost too much action in it for the Data Entry job. I had to keep rolling it back to listen to parts of it for the second time because I just didn't believe what I heard. Tons of action & some it unbelievable but I loved this book anyway. Buy them all, don't just believe me!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Collectors to be better than the print version?

I love Audio books because I don't have time to read the print book. I love Audio books because I can listen to a good book while I do hours of data entry. I love Audio books because I can listen in bed when I can't sleep. Not interested in buying the same story twice in two formats, what a silly idea??

What did you like best about this story?

I love the Misfit Four! They make a wonderfully nosy bunch of accidental heros! I really like the quiet way they go about righting wrongs even when they have to deal with bodies. Adding Annabel to the story is a real interesting move that I hope only adds to the excitement. Sometimes, it breaks up the team but I suspect she'll only add spice.

    Any additional comments?

    I want the whole series!!!
