Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, serving in the household of the enigmatic Commander and his bitter wife. She may go out once a day to markets whose signs are now pictures because women are not allowed to read. She must pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, for in a time of declining birthrates her value lies in her fertility, and failure means exile to the dangerously polluted Colonies. Offred can remember a time when she lived with her husband and daughter and had a job, before she lost even her own name....

What did you love best about The Handmaid's Tale?

Margaret Atwood's writing style is gorgeous, and her word play is just as lovely in audio as it is on the page. Claire Danes is a perfect fit as the narrator for this novel. If you haven't read a novel by Atwood before, this is a great place to start.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Offred. As a narrator, she is insightful and heartbreaking.

    Which scene was your favorite?

Any scene between Offred and Moira is great.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Whenever the narrator thinks of her past life, I get a little emotional. Although the story is great on its own, Danes elevates the story to another level with her subtle, yet heartfelt delivery.

    Any additional comments?

Try this audiobook! I'm not one for writing reviews, but this book was too good not to write one for. I'm so glad I purchased this!
