After thoroughly enjoying Maeve Binchy's Week In Winter and Tara Road (narrated by Rosalyn Landor and Katherine Borowitz, respectively), I was looking forward to another great story in Scarlet Feather. However, I could not get past the unpleasant narration by Barbara Caruso. Absolutely every sentence is dripping with overacting. The dramatic pauses, breathlessness, and emphatic exclamation just makes this book exhausting and hard to follow. The relentless intonations are unrelated to what is actually going on and detract from the story-- drama for the sake of drama, not connected to the storyline. I really tried, but after about an hour and a half, I surrendered. I will go out of my way to avoid this narrator from now on.

In this brave, beautiful, and deeply personal memoir, Laura Bush, one of our most beloved and private first ladies, tells her own extraordinary story. She writes openly about the White House during wartime, the withering and relentless media spotlight, and the transformation of her role as she began to understand the power of the first lady.

This was such a good listen, narrated and written by Laura Bush, so the sentiment, inflection and even the mild Texan accent made it so much more authentic! She is a good writer, with a natural talent for describing her experiences vividly and movingly. Her perspective is direct, and clearly her own, with insights of private moments of monumentally important events that are touching and telling. It is quite regrettable that Audible has offered this historical book only in an abridged format. There is MUCH missing from the actual book, and it is apparent throughout. I would have LOVED the opportunity to listen to Mrs. Bush's experiences in their entirety, without the editing and elimination of what were clearly key, interesting chapters of her story!

Don Tillman, professor of genetics, has never been on a second date. So when an acquaintance informs him that he would make a "wonderful" husband, his first reaction is shock. Yet he must concede to the statistical probability that there is someone for everyone, and Don sets out to find the perfect partner. She will be punctual and logical - most definitely not a barmaid, a smoker, a drinker, or a late-arriver. Yet Rosie Jarman is all these things. She is also beguiling, fiery, intelligent - and on a quest of her own....

    Story

Told from the initially rigid viewpoint of a science professor with a serious but functioning form of OCD or Asberger's, this lovely story draws you in as he realizes his loneliness and decides to remedy it by finding the "right" woman. The journey is both touchingly, and surprisingly, honest and sweet while true to the realities of his odd personality. I laughed through many parts, cringed and empathized with others, nearly all of which are relatable at some level to each of us and our human awkward moments. It is heartwarming and sincere, with a generous dose of suspense woven through it. I really enjoyed it!

One of the best books I've read in a very long time. Pulled me in quickly, loved the well-drawn characters, kept me thinking and wondering till the end. Unfortunately, the audio quality is terrible. At a volume where you can understand the reader, it becomes ear-splitting when the drama picks up. I listen while running and in my car, and this was such a problem, I nearly stopped listening but for the intrigue of the actual story. I've never run into this problem with audiobooks before after many good listens. It wasn't the reader's fault, but rather the production quality.

In Washington: A Life celebrated biographer Ron Chernow provides a richly nuanced portrait of the father of our nation. This crisply paced narrative carries the reader through his troubled boyhood, his precocious feats in the French and Indian War, his creation of Mount Vernon, his heroic exploits with the Continental Army, his presiding over the Constitutional Convention, and his magnificent performance as America's first president.

An amazing man, not without his flaws, but who rose to greatness at a time our country needed real greatness to survive its birth. I enjoyed the epic approach to Washington's entire life, from youth through his death, and the ranging coverage of the events and other personalities that shaped the times. I learned so much history that I had missed as a young student, but was presented here in such an interesting, indeed riveting at times, biography. I am generally a fan of historical fiction, and this was far more compelling than most fictional works. Although it is quite long, I grew attached to the story as I listened, and was sorry when it ended. I wish every American child could hear/read this story as part of their US history education. Narration by Scott Brick made it all the better! It was wonderful!

Standing over the body of a Supreme Court nominee, Lieutenant Sam Holland is hip-deep in another high-profile murder case. The fact that she was one of the last people to see Julian Sinclair alive just complicates things even more. On the plus side, her relationship with Senator Nick Cappuano is heating up - but it's also attracting a lot of unwanted media attention and blinding flash bulbs.

I was looking for a good crime thriller, with perhaps a bit of intelligent romance. Unfortunately, this wasn't it. The main character is unreasonably bitchy and arrogant, without superior skills or traits to warrant her conceit. I found her very unlikable, and the men who uniformly adore her come across as ridiculous wimps who put up with her abuse inexplicably. Making this unpleasant experience worse, the author regularly injects wholly unnecessary liberal editorializing throughout the story. This is the first time I've used Audible's excellent return policy.

On November 10, 2008, Dr. Eben Alexander was driven into coma by a disease so lethal that only 1 in 10,000,000 survive. Seven days later, he awakened with memories of a fantastic odyssey deep into another realm that were more real than this earthly one - memories that included meeting a deceased birth sister he had never known existed. Dr. Alexander deployed all his knowledge as a scientist to find out whether his mind could have played a trick on him. In its shutdown state, there was no way it could have.

What did you love best about Proof of Heaven?

It was very personal, especially because it was read by the author, and it was like listening to him tell me the story himself. I was genuinely touched by the personal, human side of his story, but riveted and satisfied by the depth of his scientific, professional knowledge and his striking ability to blend the two aspects into a very moving, thought-inducing story. I have to listen to it again, because I want to hear the details I missed going through the first time. Adding to my list of all-time favorites!
