Victorian London is a cesspool of crime, and Scotland Yard has only 12 detectives - known as “The Murder Squad” - to investigate thousands of murders every month. Created after the Metropolitan Police’s spectacular failure to capture Jack the Ripper, The Murder Squad suffers rampant public contempt. They have failed their citizens. When Walter Day, the squad’s newest hire, is assigned the case of the murdered detective, he finds a strange ally in the Yard’s first forensic pathologist, Dr. Bernard Kingsley.

Would you consider the audio edition of The Yard to be better than the print version?

    No idea.

What other book might you compare The Yard to and why?

The Alienist, the Anatomy of Murder, White City

Have you listened to any of Toby Leonard Moore???s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    No.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but also a book to savor at leisure since a book like this does not come around very often.

    Any additional comments?

More Victorian Era mysteries that are not romantic fantasies and are not formula based. More like this! I get annoyed with the female hero that seems to be always ahead of her time and always outsmarts the stupid men. Too formula and predictable and too numerous. I want a plausible but exciting and intellectually stimulating book like this. Very interesting and transported the reader to my favorite time period. Great story.

Highflying army career women Sergeant Amy Callan and Lieutenant Caroline Cook are both victims of sexual harassment by their superiors. And now they're both dead. FBI psychological profilers start the hunt for a serial murderer; a smart guy with a score to settle, a loner, an army man, a ruthless vigilante known to them both.

Tim says: "Reacher is great. The Reader is not."
    "Lee Child call Scott Brick"
    Overall

I agree this narrator does not do justice to the Lee Child- Jack Reacher series. These books cry out for the talent of Scott Brick and this story would be fantastic with the right narrator - as is I enjoy the books but....

Nevada Barr's award-winning mystery series captivates fans with vividly drawn wilderness settings and the resourceful sleuth, middle-aged park ranger Anna Pigeon. Deep South portrays Anna boldly confronting hostile teenagers, suspicious locals, and a resentful "old-boy" network as she struggles to solve a gruesome murder. Anna leaves behind her beloved Mesa Verde to take on a position as district park ranger of the Mississippi Natchez Trace Parkway.

Andy says: "Great sense of place"
    "Connect to Nature and Murder"
    Overall

Wonderful series - start with the first book and you will want to buy the whole series. A female park ranger with hands full of murder and mayhem. Anna Piegon - loves, ages, and grows through the series.
The description of nature settings, both serene and violent, transports the reader to a new and throughly enjoyable arm chair adventure. And will make you wish you didn't live in the city and have such a boring job! Just relax and get lost in the tale!

Best-selling author Caleb Carr deftly combines historical detail with spine-tingling chills. The year is 1896, and a serial killer is loose in New York City. His targets are poor young boys working as transvestite prostitutes. The general public has little interest in the victims, but Chief of Police Theodore Roosevelt wants the murderer stopped. He assembles a clandestine group of amateur detectives to track the killer, but there are powerful forces at work who don't want the crimes solved.

    Julie says: "Excellent historical thriller"
    "Excellent Psychological and Historical Mystery!!"
    Overall

Alienist equals Psychologist in today's language. This book begins a series (two books so far and hopefully more to come) from Caleb Carr.

The murder of boy prostitutes (who polite society pretends do not exist) begins and normal police channels seem not to care. So it is up to an unlikely group lead by a psychologist/ alienist to investigate. This book has suspense, mystery, perversion, and mental illness of the most extreme kind, all set in the Victorian era. What more could anyone want!

From the author of The Secret History comes a dark, suspenseful novel of lost childhood. Harriet Dusfresnes is a child in Mississippi, haunted by the murder of her brother when she was just a baby. He was found hanging from a tree in their backyard; his killer was never identified, nor did the family ever recover. Only Harriet's teenage sister might have seen what happened that day, and she has blocked it out from her memory.

I absolutely love this book. The characters are eccentric and the story is electric! This book is combines mystery, suspense, and comedy. I can still visualize some of the scenes and chuckle.
