I was given this book to read as a child and have loved it ever since. (I'm now over 40). The style of the dramatisation is a little bit dated and I find the music grates a bit on my ear but it does add to the atmosphere. I have listened to it three times since I bought it this week! As with any abridgement, one can always be disappointed about what was left out and what was retained from the original book but the spirit of the story is still there. The actors are very wholehearted about the project. The book was aimed at children and I think they will love this although it does get a bit scary at times!

I enjoyed it as much as the far fetched but action packed Matthew Reilly books most of which I own.

The plot was complicated and the characters believable.

The narrator did a great job of differenciating between the characters. I was never at a loss as to who was who.

Yes because I like science fiction and time/light speed travel tales and this one fits the bill.

Hopscotch by Neal Stephenson perhaps. Because of the material, not the detail or imagination.

As with any good narrator, he has a greater repertoire of voices than I could conjour up in my own mind.

It was a good listen but it didn't move me to tears or laughter.

This narrator has the tone of voice that absolutely suits the story. It's a storyline that some will find unbearable if not unbelievable but the whole book relies on people understanding stories. I think it is lovely. I bought it on a whim and although I have already listened to it twice, it is a book I will come back to because it evokes a view of Australia that we would like to be part of or like to be true.

My parents owned this on vinyl back in the 1960's and it achieved cult status in our household so I was thrilled to find this full version featuring Richard Burton on Audible. Perhaps as someone who has spent time in South Wales it has more resonance for me but I would be surprised if anyone interested in dramatic prose or poetry couldn't find something to enjoy about this lovely, nostalgic cameo of life in a Welsh village.

I really enjoyed the content of this book. Bill Bryson has such an appealing style, amusing while still being informative. I was a bit disappointed with the adenoidal sound to his voice though. Hopefully that won't be a problem for the majority of his listeners but I kept wanting him to blow his nose! I did hesitate to comment on that but if you listen to the sample and think I'm wrong then I wholeheartedly recommend a great fun listen.
