This book had it all - great characters, exciting story, PERFECT narrator. I cannot say enough good things about it. I was laughing out loud at the many witty remarks and I thoroughly enjoyed the steamy love scenes too. All around excellent book. Definitely get the audio because the narrator was just amazing. All the voices were distinct and different and the accents were spot on. Loved it loved it loved it!!!
The story was just okay for me. It didn't surprise me at all, the older child was pretty bratty and it was short. I got it during a 4.95 sale so for that amount it wasn't too bad. I was disappointed with most of it. I did like hearing about the food served by their grandmother and the magic mirror's storage area was interesting. Otherwise it was just meh.
This book made me uncomfortable and not in a good way. There were passages where I enjoyed the characters and story. I did not enjoy the fighting between the male and female for dominance. It irritated me. The sex scenes were something you would read in a porn magazine. It was more erotic lit than romance. I am not a romance reader - I like books that include an element of romance but have an actual story. I didn't care too much for this story. The narrator seemed slightly off as well.
The first part of this book was very enjoyable for me. The what-ifs were intriguing and the mystery was...well mysterious. When the book took a turn towards the dreadfully boring theoretical physics I had to force myself to continue. The idea that the future is immutable seems ridiculous to me. It is especially silly in this story because getting a glimpse into the future would change so many lives. It just seemed absurd and the book never addressed that issue as it related to the irreversible future. I liked the premise but not so much the execution. I hated the ending and it was just dull. The conclusion frustrated me and did not satisfy.
Also, I think that the story could have used some kind of levity. The narrator was just okay for me. If you are into mind numbingly boring physics then this could be the book for you. I was less than impressed.
Both plausible and utterly chilling, this book was fantastic. The narrator was good and not distracting. It generated many discussions with my husband on the possibility of a world without electricity and running water. The story was fascinating and made you think of all the things that would happen and how it would affect you personally to live through this scenario. I found the story to be alternately horrifying and exciting.
Rachel Caine's Bryn Davis is tough, smart, damn near indestructible and just a little bit broken. I stopped listening to another book as soon as this came available because I just love the series. I could not wait to find out what happened to Bryn. This book has action, romance, thrills and everything you could ask for. The concept is so creative and unlike other paranormal books. Bryn is not alive, not dead and not a zombie.
Ms. Caine created a world that works - not too far out there and just close enough to reality to be believable. Julia Whelan is a fabulous narrator.
Just one more thing - Audible please don't make me wait so long for the next installment to come out on audio!! I am impatient!
Let me start by saying that I am a fan of Joe Kimball, J.A. Konrath, Jack Kilborn and whatever other names he dreams up. I have read his Jack Daniels novels and I LOVED Timecaster. This book however was awful. The plot was too ridiculous for even a scifi nerd to enjoy. The ending was the very worst. When the book ended I was actually angry that I had wasted my time on it. It was THAT bad. I normally don't get so riled up over a book however this one was a real piece of work. The gratuitous sex, the fat jokes(not funny dude),and especially the sheer stupidity of the ending - singing fruit - really?? It was all too much for me. I think if I had stopped listening to the book a couple chapters before idiotic ending I would have given it a higher rating. I did enjoy that he brought back a couple characters from his Jack Daniels series and shamelessly self promoted through the book. That cool and funny. The rest was mostly crap with a few bits of entertainment. Read it if you must but don't say I didn't warn you.
This is one of the best paranormal series I have ever read. Ilona Andrews is the very best.
It took me a while to understand the whole magic and tech switches. At first that was really confusing however once it was explained a little more I understood.
My favorite line from this book is "Here kitty kitty." The line itself isn't funny until you know who she is talking to(the Beast Lord of Atlanta). It is unique and focuses a lot on shapeshifters but there are many other magical creatures. It is interesting that the vampires are more like animals in this world and are NOTHING like Twilight vampires. The vampires are piloted by necromancers. This is very different from most paranormal series and not at all glamorous for the vampires. I highly recommend this series. I have listened to the whole series twice and read most of the books and novella's in print. I have a huge crush on Curran and Kate is amazing. She is tough as nails and bad ass but secretly soft hearted. The narrator is SO good also. For me this is the perfect series - excellent story telling and excellent narration. Love love love it. Get it now! It is a must have read.
I read this series on my Kindle and immediately bought Hunger Games on Audible. Very seldom do I reread books - there are just too many that I want to read. But this series is something really special. I was looking to add another dimension to the story that I love so much. To my disappointment, the narrator did not do the book justice. I hated the voice she used for Katniss and Peeta was a disappointment as well. Maybe it would have been okay if I hadn't read it and seen the movie but I was really unhappy with the narrator. I highly, highly recommend the book and the following 2 books in the trilogy. I just cannot recommend the Audible versions.
Molly Harper is witty, creative and highly entertaining. Every character makes me laugh and I just love them all so much. Jane is an extremely funny main character but even the characters with less page space are just as hilarious. The narration is amazing - each character has a distinct voice and there are no mistakes. Jolene is so funny and her "voice" is one of the things that I love so much about her. Mama Ginger, Dick, Gilbert, Aunt Ginny, Andrea, Jeb - I adore them!! I have a very long commute (2+ hours a day) and this series on audio is one of the things that make it bearable. Don't miss it!
I would not listen to Destined again. The language was awful - I get that it is supposed to be teens and they don't have the most sophisticated language but come on. Kramisha is the absolute worst - the narrator made her sound like an uneducated pre-Civil War slave. Just knock it off already. I cringed every time she spoke. I think the writers were shooting for a person with hip hop vibe but she just sounded like an idiot. Instead of sounding fresh and relevant to today's pop culture - she sounded stupid and uneducated. Another one that annoyed me by sounding vulgar and uneducated was Aphrodite. Her dark wit in prior books was funny but grated on me throughout this book. Her use of
I keep coming back for the characters and because I want to know how things turn out. I like the story but agree with many reviewers who want some closure on old storylines and fresh content instead of the same old recycled crap.
The performance could have been better with a different narrator. Caitlin Davies is awful in this series. The original narrator was the best out of all of them. At the very least the director should have all narrators pronounce the names the same way. Pick one pronunciation and STICK with it.
No way I could listen to this straight through. I had to keep taking breaks because the narrator was bugging me so much.
