There have been many Marines. There have been many marksmen. But there has been only one Sergeant Carlos Hathcock, a legend of Marine lore. He stalked the Viet Cong behind enemy lines. His record has never been matched: 93 confirmed kills. This is his story. Powerful, chilling, and all true.

Where does Marine Sniper rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Top 3 and I have listened to way too many audio books.

What did you like best about this story?

Like best? I suppose the entire book was what I liked best.

What about Kevin Foley’s performance did you like?

I wish K Foley would perform ALL audio books from this day forward. This guy is by far the best narrator (or whatever you call these people) I have ever heard. He knows when and where to pause, change tempo, increase tone, etc. yes the book is awesome and combined with this guys delivery, wow!

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    Forced retirement, WTF?

    Any additional comments?

Do not hesitate, not for a second, download this book RIGHT NOW!

Junger turns his brilliant and empathetic eye to the reality of combat - the fear, the honor, and the trust among men in an extreme situation whose survival depends on their absolute commitment to one another. His on-the-ground account follows a single platoon through a 15-month tour of duty in the most dangerous outpost in Afghanistan's Korengal Valley.

Would you try another book from Sebastian Junger and/or Sebastian Junger?

    Probably not

Would you ever listen to anything by Sebastian Junger again?

Not if Junger narrates it himself. Junger is a journalist, he uses words for a living essentially. This book is horribly written compared to books that have been written by soldiers themselves.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I understand that Junger is not an actor or does not narrate books as a profession. With that said he reads the words almost as if he has never seen them before, much less actually written them. He pauses mid sentence and inappropriate times. His intensity will increase when not necessary etc.

What character would you cut from WAR?

Audible, this is a ridiculous question for a work of non-fiction. Please look at your system for book reviews and improve it.

    Any additional comments?

This is not the worst book I have ever read in this genre but out of 30 or so titles I've read it's probably in the bottom three. I very much appreciate that Junger risked his life to be able to expose this to the world. It seems like after he got back to his safe and comfortable environment that he just rushed through the writing of the book. It is too bad he didn't just slow down and do a better job.

Would you listen to Tai-Pan again? Why?

Immediately started listening a second time.

What other book might you compare Tai-Pan to and why?

Huge fan of the O'brian series. This is the best thing I have read since finishing them.

What about John Lee’s performance did you like?

Hands down the best narrator I have ever heard after listening to 200 or so audiobooks. I can't describe how incredible Lee is. This guy should be forced to live in a recording studio and not be allowed to see the light of day until he has narrated 1000's of books. He needs to narrate Shogun damn it!

If you could rename Tai-Pan, what would you call it?

    Stupid question Audible! Wtf?

    Any additional comments?

I don't write many reviews on here. This book and narrator were so incredible I felt compelled to....

  • Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption

Why we think it’s a great listen: Seabiscuit was a runaway success, and Hillenbrand’s done it again with another true-life account about beating unbelievable odds. On a May afternoon in 1943, an Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared.....

What made the experience of listening to Unbroken the most enjoyable?

The story was inspiring, gripping, and just about everything else you want in audio entertainment.

What other book might you compare Unbroken to and why?

Lone Survivor, American Sniper, Marine Sniper

Have you listened to any of Edward Herrmann’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Had not heard any before this book. He was really good with the delivery.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The Bird needed some freaking payback. This psychopath needed to be slowly and deliberately made to suffer.

    Any additional comments?

This book is amazing! But now i will pick apart a specific incident, the author and Louie do not blame Phil. Well guess what, he was the PIC and I absolutely lay the blame for the deaths of the crew- and Louie, and Phil's circumstances on Phil. Phil, himself should have feathered the motor. Even if you disagree with that statement, Phil should have specifically instructed the SPECIFIC motor to feather. Right there are 2 colossal mistakes. Okay, so moving forward with the # 1 not feathered and the perfectly good # 2 motor that is now mistakenly feathered what does this incompetent "captain" do? Full power on 3 & 4? Result inverted airplane in the drink.

Now Coughlin has written a highly personal story about his deadly craft, taking readers deep inside an invisible society that is off-limits to outsiders. This is not a heroic battlefield memoir but the careful study of an exceptional man who must keep his sanity while carrying forward one of the deadliest legacies in the U.S. military today.

    Yes

What was most disappointing about the authors’s story?

    Boring

Did Dick Hill do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

    Differentiation is not the issue.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    None

    Any additional comments?

I love the genre and subject matter. I was very disappointed with this book. 4 books that are excellent are, Marine Sniper by Charles Henderson (Carlos Hathcock story), American Sniper about Chris Kyle, Lone Survivor, and Unbroken. These are must read/listens. Skip Shooter.
