The hero of Everyman is obsessed with mortality. As he reminds himself at one point, "I'm 34! Worry about oblivion when you're 75." But he cannot help himself. He is the ex-husband in three marriages gone wrong. He is the father of two sons who detest him, despite a daughter who adores him. A masterful portrait of one man's inner struggles, Everyman is a brilliant showcase for one of the world's most distinguished novelists.

    JOHN says: "Full Frontal Roth"
    "Excellent reading"
    Overall

George Guidall is an excellent reader for Roth's novella -- unlike many other readers, he doesn't overact, and simply gets out of the way of Roth's prose. Recommended.

John Perry did two things on his 75th birthday. First, he visited his wife's grave. Then he joined the army. The good news is that humanity finally made it into interstellar space. The bad news is that planets fit to live on are scarce - and alien races willing to fight us for them are common. So, we fight, to defend Earth and to stake our own claim to planetary real estate. Far from Earth, the war has been going on for decades: brutal, bloody, unyielding.

Michael says: "As good as Heinlein"
    "Cocoon in Space"

Many people like this book, but I couldn't stand it. The banter among the "old farts" was straight out of a cheap sitcom, and none of them were particularly interesting. Once the aliens show up, it gets worse. Try Robert Charles Wilson's "Spin" instead.

Perfume or poison? A young Italian student takes rooms overlooking the most glorious flower garden the world has ever known. But, when he falls in love with the mysterious Eve who tends to the garden, he learns that this Paradise is anything but a Garden of Eden.

    Michael says: "That's not italian"
    "That's not italian"
    Overall

The price is right for this classic Hawthorne tale, but the reader's cheesy Italian accents for the dialogue just about ruins it. Avoid.
