In Bradbury's unforgettable modern Gothic masterpiece, Something Wicked This Way Comes, something evil arrives in a small Midwestern town on the crest of the wind one autumn night. A "dark carnival" with frightening attractions and supernatural characters sets up stakes. It is up to two 13-year-old boys, James Nightshade and William Holloway, to figure out a way to save the souls of the town.

The narrators voice is exceedingly irritating. I enjoyed the movie so thought to listen to the book, I much preferred the movie.

Kafka on the Shore follows the fortunes of two remarkable characters. Kafka Tamura runs away from home at 15, under the shadow of his father's dark prophesy. The aging Nakata, tracker of lost cats, who never recovered from a bizarre childhood affliction, finds his pleasantly simplified life suddenly turned upside down.

    "Bizzare"
    Overall

To be honest I had no idea what this story was about when I downloaded it, in the begining I didn't know if I was reading about an alien invasion or a defence force experiment. Then I realised that the story was inane and sensless. It appears to try to take a philisophical slant on a 15 year old boy trying to find his identity but all too often vears towards his pubesent fantisies. The story is bizzare, weird and freakish. I did enjoy the old simple guy Nakata, but a big white worm coming out of his mouth when he died and Johnny Walker taking hearts out of live cats to eat just became a bit directionless. The narrators did an excellent job of making the story sound interesting and deserve to be commended on seeing the story through to the end. I think 15 year old boys would enjoy this story. If you are truly interested in philosphy try Jostein Gaarder.

Northumberland, 1804: Matthew Pryde, a young engineer, is sent to the small coastal village of Onswick to survey an offshore island, known locally as the Black Corbie. He must persuade the local landowner that a lighthouse needs to be built to prevent the high number of fatal shipwrecks that occur there. However, after suffering violence and intimidation, Matthew realises that the locals are deeply against the project.

The story is well written but the story itself loses some momentum towards the predictable end. I usually feel a satisfaction at the end of a story but this time I just felt that it was a waste of my time. The narrator was excellant.

It is the spring of 1809 and a small British army is stationed in Lisbon when Marshal Soult begins the French invasion of northern Portugal. No one knows whether the British will fight or leave, but there is little choice for Lieutenant Richard Sharpe and his squad of riflemen, who are sent into the beleaguered city of Oporto to rescue a British mother and daughter who have chosen to stay rather than flee southwards.

    Overall

I don't think Bernard Cornwell could write anything that wouldn't keep me enthralled so completley. I've purchased every unabridged Sharpe story available from Audio and am now working on his other series. William Gaminara is my favourite narrator I've heard on any of the Audible books, he even manages a convincing female voice and yet our hero Sharpe is as strong and as masculine as can be.

Adrift in the Mediterranean Sea, Ben falls captive to a band of slave traders and their leader, Al Misurata. With his faithful dog, Ned, at his side, Ben must plot escape as the ship of scoundrels sails up the Libyan coastline toward Italy, where a trap awaits. Ruthless enemies and hard times appear around every bend, but Ben and Ned have quick wits to rely on and, just as important, one another.

Initially I was extremely critical with Brian Jacques narration as he is stuttery and coughs in the first 10 mins. He quickly warms up and delivers a wonderful rendition of an excellant story that kept me spellbound and not wanting to remove my earplugs. His characters are easily discernable and full of colour. I love this story and the excellant narration.

When Edward Enfield decided to cycle around Ireland, he was enchanted by prehistoric fortresses, rugged landscapes, and landladies who insisted on washing his shirts. He takes you with him on a gentle ride up the west coast, eating fresh fish and enormous breakfasts along the way, and stopping to chat to peat-cutters, fishermen, eccentric tourists, and a famous matchmaker.
