Lisbeth Salander—the heart of Larsson’s two previous novels—lies in critical condition, a bullet wound to her head, in the intensive care unit of a Swedish city hospital. She’s fighting for her life in more ways than one: if and when she recovers, she’ll be taken back to Stockholm to stand trial for three murders. With the help of her friend, journalist Mikael Blomkvist, she will not only have to prove her innocence, but also identify and denounce those in authority.

I fell in love with this series from the start. The quirky character of Lisbeth with her intelligence and poor social skills is beautifully conceived and written. The Swedish locales made the books seem fresh and different and the plotting was extremely well done. The narration was also first rate. It was bittersweet to read the final chapter knowing that it would truly be the end. I have recommended the series to family and friends. No one has been disappointed although many think the first and last books are marginally better than the middle one. They are all really hard to put down. Bravo, Mr. Larsson, and thank you.

When a local girl falls prey to a sadistic serial killer, Nashville homicide lieutenant Taylor Jackson and her lover, FBI profiler Dr. John Baldwin, find themselves in a joint investigation pursuing a vicious murderer. The Southern Strangler is slaughtering his way through the Southeast, leaving a gruesome memento at each crime scene – the prior victim’s severed hand.

Would you try another book from J. T. Ellison and/or Joyce Bean?

I took all the J.T. Ellison books off my wish list. I found the romance between the lead characters to be a distraction and thought it did very little to humanize them.

Would you recommend All the Pretty Girls to your friends? Why or why not?

I didn't enjoy the book but if you like a little romance with your detective/light perhaps it might appeal to you. I prefer a little more hard-boiled cop story with realistic police work. The heroine could have just as easily been a school teacher and there was very little detective work involved. Predictable and unimpressive.

Why we think it’s a great listen: How do you one-up a book that’s already a global literary phenomenon? Hire Simon Vance to (flawlessly) interpret the loves, lives, and murders of Sweden’s cold and secret-filled world. A spellbinding amalgam of murder mystery, family saga, love story, and financial intrigue. It's about the disappearance 40 years ago of Harriet Vanger, a young scion of one of the wealthiest families in Sweden.

    Overall

I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery! The setting is a little different than the standard LA, NYC or Washington and that was refreshing. The characters are very well drawn with more than enough detail to make them come alive. Even though there are quite a few characters, the author has been careful to define them well and avoid any confusion. The plot is complex enough to satisfy and the resolution is, while not entirely joyful, totally realistic. Author keeps everything turning all the way through. Enjoyed the narration too. Recommended without hesitation.
