This story was so flat and uninteresting! I really can't believe people have rated it so high. The characters are blah and the story lacks depth and complexity. Don't waste your time and money here!
This book is amazing! It brings together all the major events in history and weaves them in a seamless, beautiful story. Say goodbye to all those historical fragments in your head and welcome a cohesive, entertaining history of the world in only a few hours of listening. The narrator is also outstanding! I was very sad when the book ended. Well done!!!!
I have listened to hundreds of books and without a doubt this is one of the best stories and narration I have ever listened to! I truly did not want the story to end. Amazing job by the narrator! I wish all audible books were like this one!!!
I just finished the first part of this audiobook and I must say two things: 1. I dont like or care for any of the characters and 2. Nothing happens!! For the entire duration of the first part, nothing has happened!!! I barely know the characters because they are very shallow and I do not know the direction the story is taking. I actually could not tell you what the story is about! I am seriously thinking about giving up and reading another book. I don't want to lose my money but neither do I want to waste my time. Should I stick with it or give up?
At first I had reservations about reading this book. It is long and I thought, what is so remarkable about Julia Child? the truth is I loved it! The performance is flawless, one of the best I have listened to. I cried at the end when Julia died because by then I felt she was a good friend instead of a stranger. Wonderful book and narration! Highly recommended.
Please someone tell the reader of this book that in Spain, the "s" does not sound like a "z". Only the "c" sometimes and, of course, the "z". It is driving me crazy. Her name is Sira, not "Zira". This might seem trivial but she does it every time she reads words containing the letter "s". As you can imagine, this is very often. Right now, even though I am enjoying the story, I do not know if I can continue to listen. I wish I had bought the book instead!
I enjoyed the first half of this book. The second half got repetitive, especially the part when the narrator reads entries from a journal. Every day the same thing, dust storms, dead crops, hopelessness, and despair. A couple of entries would have been ok to make a point, however, too many entries with the same descriptions were definitely unnecessary. By this time, I was hoping the book would end but it still dragged on. Sometimes authors get so involved with their subject, they don't know when to stop and bring things to a close. Sadly, for this book, less would have been better.
Of all the books I have listened to from Audible, this is my favorite. I loved he way the story was told and I learned a lot about FDR and Eleanor. This is one of those books that inspire you to read other books about the subject. If you are an expert on FDR, you might not appreciate it as I did but if, like me, you want to learn about FDR's presidency and family life, this book brings it all together beautifully in a cohesive, entertaining way.
When I found out this book was narrated by Jim Dale (narrator of the Harry Potter books). I did not hesitate to buy it. As expected, the narration was superb; however, the story is terrible! The characters are flat and you never get to truly know them or care for them. The story is weird and amateurish. Nothing much happens and the endless descriptions of the circus are very repetitive and boring. I regret spending time and money on this one!
This boook is just boring. I have been waiting for something to happen and so far (I am almost finished) NOTHING of any depth or importance has happened. This book was highly recommended by a friend and I will now have to tell her that I truly hated it. My advice is: skip this one! Yes, the book transports you to the 1930's but then abandons you there with nothing interesting or challenging to do or learn. You just get tired of the endless martinis, cigarettes, and dead ends in the story.
