After reading a magazine review of this book, I was happy to find it already available on Audible. I listened to it over the course of 2 days and immediately listened to it again. There are many layers to this book, only the most obvious being the first-hand experience of the September 11 hijackings. The horror of those events is protrayed in the awestruck and stunned manner of those who were in New York on that day, but the underlying feelings are much more widespread and relect all our humanity. I experienced that day from thousands of miles and 4 time zones away, in my home in Alaska, but felt many of the same feelings that I found in this book. The simple act of looking at oneself in a mirror and comparing this view to that held by others who see us, the innocent simplicity of children's misunderstanding of the name of a terrorist and their fear of returning planes, and of course the inability to undo what happened, to have to remember it and view it repeatedly in the media are just some of the subjects covered simply but so well in this book. We have heard and read often that 9/11 was a day that changed all Americans: I think this simple yet complex and deep book captures many of the deep and human ways it changed us. I highly recommend this book as a reminder of our common feelings, whether we were on the streets of Lower Manhattan, the Interior of Alaska, or the many thousands of other places where Americans felt, and feel, the impact of that day.
fun, fast, easy

Oh, it made me laugh throughout.
It was great to hear Tina narrate it herself.
This is one of the best books I've either read or listened to in a long time. I am so glad I discovered it on Audible first, because I don't see how this book could have been as enjoyable without the perfect narration. I am so glad there were different narrators, not just one trying to change her voice for each character. This was such a thoughtfully intricate book, with a bittersweet ending. I loved it.
I was looking for a book to enjoy and take my mind away while I did long hours of finishing a complex quilting job, and this book was perfect. While I don't have the money or the luxury of time that these characters had, obviously, to enable them to spend much of their summer on Nantucket, I could certainly identify with the experiences that life in their 50's and 60's brought to The Hot Flash Club members! I enjoyed the distinct personalities of the various women, and appreciated the fact that they had lives that included meaningful work, both the ups and downs of family (and a hint of realistic co-dependency), and yes, romance and even sex! It's nice to find some light, enjoyable but well-written reading about my own age group. I plan to download the other books in this series for more summer pleasure. The narrator did a good job with the characters, and was a good voice to listen to, too,
As someone who is neither a dancer nor well educated about life in China during the Cultural Revolution, the information in this book was out of my usual interest zone, and I am so glad that the Audible blurb caught my attention and lured me in! This is a fascinating book, and despite its length it captured my attention throughout. I kept having to remind myself that Li Cunxin is slightly younger than I am, although the experiences of his childhood and youth sound as though they must have occured a century before. Compared to the freedom and comfort of average American life in the past four decades, Li's life was grim. However, his attitude, determination, and family support are all the more inspring because of how much he had to overcome. I highly recommend this book. While the narrator's voice is wonderful, I would have preferred an Asian narrator, because the British accent at times became overwhelming. I am a visual listener, and I had trouble visualizing a young Chinese male when listening to this narrator. Other than that, I have no reservations about this book. I just wish I could have the opportunity to see Li dance!
