The artifact is found seven miles below the surface of the sea and beneath 40 more feet of sand. The Navy's efforts to raise a wrecked submarine uncover it - and set in motion a scientific race to retrieve it, to discover just what it is and where it came from. Denser than any substance known to man, it has broken every drill bit they've tried on it and will not budge an inch. It resists every effort to breach it - or communicate with it.

I tried this book as an "audible recommends" suggestion. What a pleasant surprise. I like the way the author was able to comment on the last century of history using the aliens as his impartial observers. I'm eager to listen to more from this author.

Reacher is hitching through the heat of West Texas and getting desperate for a ride. The last thing he's worried about is exactly who picks him up.

She's called Carmen. She's a good-looking young woman, she has a beautiful little girl...and she has married into the wrong family. They're called the Greers. They're a bitter and miserly clan, and they've made her life a living hell. Worse, her monster of a husband is soon due out of prison. So she needs protection, and she needs it now.

Lawyers can't help. Cops can't be trusted. So Reacher goes home with her to the lonely ranch where nothing is as it seems, and where evil swirls around them like dust in a storm. Within days, Carmen's husband is dead - and simmering secrets send Echo, Texas, up in flames.

Where does Echo Burning rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I found this story a little different the typical Reacher formula, in that all the evil and menace brewing does not immediately fall on Reacher.

In terms of "final battle", this was not his hardest conflict.
I felt there was good character development here - if you read the series, you definitely should read this one as it helps shape the "vigilante" he becomes.

Also, if you are introducing people to Jack Reacher novels, this may be a good one to start with. You get a taste of his personality and ethics, his investigation skills, his fighting tactics.

Have you listened to any of Dick Hill’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, this is on par with his other work. Good range of voices and especially the hearing the "measured control" that defines Jack Reacher.
