I made it 3/4 through, and I'm giving up, can't stay interested. Not a bad reader, but the story doesn't make progress.
I read a lot of sci-fi many years ago, and I've listened the last few years to several old classics, and none have held up to my expectations. This book exceeded my expectations, a great story, excellently narrated. Not just the best sci-fi book, but the best book of any kind that I've listened to in many months. I kept backing up, not to miss any, not wanting it to end.
It's a coming of age story at a military school in the south in the 1960s, and a part of the story is the school being integrated. If the n word that rhymes with bigger bothers you, be warned that word is in the book many times. Otherwise, a decent story, decently performed. If you like other Conroy books you'd probably like this too.
Jim Dale was wonderful reading the Harry Potter series, so good I'm on my third time listening, and I'm an old guy.
The Night Circus involves secrets, some magic, mystery, and it's an ok story, but it's not as good as Harry Potter, and listening to Jim reading the story, I kept hearing Harry, Ron, Hermione, Dumbledore, Hagrid's voices and wishing I was back in their story.
I've liked the earlier books enough to listen to them again, all of them, but this one is just a little too far out. If he does another book, I'll try it, but I was disappointed in this one.
I listen to many more book than I read, but I did read this one around 15 years ago, and was impressed, and enjoyed the story. I don't know if I changed, or didn't enjoy the reader or what, but my memory of reading was much better than listening to this book.
I often try new books, and end up listing to one of Virgil's stories again instead, they're so good. I only wish they were longer, or more of them.
It's better than Casual Vacancy, but nowhere near as good as Harry Potter. I'm listening to Harry Potter again, and it's a much better story.
The reader for Cuckoo's Calling is good.
Too long, I lost interest. Maybe better for young romance readers, but that's not me
Sandford is my favorite writer, Virgil is my favorite character (Lucas is second). Conger is an excellent reader, a perfect combination. The books keep getting better and better. I didn't want to get to the end.
