"Entertaining read"
Yes, its an entertaining book with lots of drama and humour that i think benefits from an audio performance like this narrator gives. Different voices, inflections and emphasis gives depth and body to this colourful story. Also Kathleen the narrator can sing !
Other than the obvious heroine Bernadette i loved Audrey. Good development and story arc and we all know someone like her.
"Fantastic book - completely unpredictable !"
Definitely. Like all good mystery novels, you want to go back and read the story again and appreciate the setup, the clues and the characters. With my first listen I just wanted to find out what happened next, now I want to enjoy it for the story.
I liked it when they were exploring the rooms as I could imagine myself doing exactly the same thing.
I wasn't expecting the end of this book and I was also completely surprised by apartment 14. All of the surprises were welcome and while theres a few plot holes and way out stuff happening, i found that if I didn't overthink things and just went with it, I really had a fun listen.
"Great story of his inspirational journey."
I listened to the abridged audio book as it was read by Michael himself and it was lovely listening to him telling his own story. I didn't find it as emotional or as touching as i was expecting and moments that i was expecting to be teary just weren't. Not sure if this was it due to it being an abridged version and parts had been left out, as i found the story to jump around a bit and the poignant moment at the end with the walnut tree just seemed a bit lost.
Still a great story about an inspirational man.
"A fun holiday read"
There was a little humour there which was good, and it was a quick and easy listen. It lacked detail and character depth and Sookie was needy and a bit pathetic.
This is the series that True Blood is based on and for once the series is better. The series is edgy, visually appealing and actually better written than the book. It also explores the characters a little more and Sookie is a more independent woman.
"Unlikely heroine"
Its a great classic and I'm loving revisiting the classics through the medium of audio books. Northanger was a favorite as a young girl as I shared Catherine's love of old buildings. Its not as polished as Austens other novels but i love the rawness and the hurried ending.
Where Catherine explores her room her imagination takes over. Its relatable and the emotions experienced shared by many a teenage girl in the 18th and the 21st Century.
Juliet Stevenson reads flawlessly yet again. Shes my favorite narrator and brings life to every charachter
"Good premise, didn't deliver"
Halfway through this book I was finding it hard going and I was only persevering to find out what happened in the end. I was also seriously considering claiming on Audible's "good reads guarantee for the first time". The final 3rd picked up a bit though and some interesting characters emerged and it did "somewhat" piece together. It’s quite a whimsical book. It flitters around, it’s a bit flowery and there’s no plot as such. The blurb is a great premise but that’s not really what the book is about. Think of it more of a collection of short stories interwoven together.
It would be great as a short story or as a collection of short stories. Even if it was marketed differently, the blurb focuses on the man in the room but its only 5% of the book - change the focus to "An event in Greenwich".
A pretty good performance, she does the child quite well and keeps the story light.
If it was a movie it would be an independent movie in an art house cinema that would have half the characters removed OR it would be a mainstream movie based on the single story of a guy in a room and the other characters removed. Would I see it ? yes just to see how they changed it for it to work as a logical story.
"My first James Patterson and now a fan !"
I'd recommend the book without a doubt. It was my first James Patterson (obviously I've been living under a rock or something) and it was really good. The pace was good, story was interesting and not overly predictable.
For fans of Lee Child / Jack Reacher I'd give it a go. Its not of the same quality but its not a bad example of the thriller genre.
I was really distracted by the narrator. Parts were really over dramatised and the pretend sobbing just made me cringe. The pausing was inappropriate and she seemed to punctuate with loud breaths and mouth sounds. I would avoid purchasing another with her narrating.
Overall it was a good read. The writer didn't quite nail the women's friendships that were detailed within the story but its not distracting and I'd like to see how the concept of the club unfolds throughout the rest of the series.
"A Classic brought to life by excellent narration"
Its a fantastic story. Its well paced and with good detail without being flowery and Jane herself is likeable and not overtly emotional as many heroines of her era were. I remember reading this book for school and having to analyse it line by line which does nothing to endear the classics to students, but now listening to it as an adult, and having it so beautifully narrated was such joy. I found myself driving around the block snd walking for an extra half hour just to listen to it more.
