When historian Diana Bishop opens an alchemical manuscript in the Bodleian Library, it's an unwelcome intrusion of magic into her carefully ordered life. Though Diana is a witch of impeccable lineage, the violent death of her parents while she was still a child convinced her that human fear is more potent than any witchcraft. Now Diana has unwittingly exposed herself to a world she's kept at bay for years; one of powerful witches, creative, destructive daemons and long-lived vampires.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

I think the best thing that could have been done would be to change the narrator. I just couldn't listen to this narration. It was very irritating and grating and quite monotone. I listen to LOTS of audiobooks and love them but I only made it to Chapter 6 and I just couldn't listen anymore.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Another Patrick Rothfuss....I was very impressed.

What didn’t you like about Nick Podehl’s performance?

monotone, no real emotion, grating and irritating

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

annoyance and disappointment that I had wasted money on it.

  • The Ill-Made Mute: The Bitterbynde, Book 1

The Stormriders land their splendid winged stallions on the airy battlements of Isse Tower. Far below, the superstitious servants who dwell in the fortress' lower depths tell ghastly tales of evil creatures inhabiting the world outside, a world they have only glimpsed. Yet it is the least of the lowly, a mute, scarred, and utterly despised foundling, who dares to scale the Tower, sneak aboard a Windship, and then dive from the sky.

    A User says: "Great listening"
    "Good but terribly slow"
    Overall

I love Cecilia Dart-Thornton's novels so I'm not sure if this story was truly as slow to get into as I think or if it just took me a while to get used to the narrator.

After an upbringing of proper behavior and oppressive expectations, Aralorn fled her noble birthright for a life of adventure as a mercenary spy. Her latest mission involves spying on the increasingly powerful sorcerer Geoffrey ae'Magi. But in a war against an enemy armed with the powers of illusion, how do you know who the true enemy is - or where he will strike next?

Tabitha says: "Satisfying tale, interesting characters"
    "Ruined by the Narrator"
    Overall

Bor-ring! I'm sure this is a great story but I seriously can't get past the 6th chapter. The narrator is terrible. She actually sounds bored ....or drugged. I can't decide which.
