America is a barren landscape of smoldering ashes, devoid of life except for those people still struggling to scratch out some type of existence. Amidst this destruction, a father and his young son walk, always toward the coast, but with no real understanding that circumstances will improve once they arrive. Still, they persevere, and their relationship comes to represent goodness in a world of utter devastation.

    "slow start, perfect ending"
    Overall

When I purchased this book I didn't realize that it was written in the 70's. There certainly is a very anti-war political theme running through the book which made it a bit depressing. That being said, it was well written, and relevent to today. If you like post apocolyptic literature this isn't as quickly paced as others but still a satisfying read.

The system was simple. Everyone understood it. Books were for burning, along with the houses in which they were hidden. Guy Montag was a fireman whose job it was to start fires, and he enjoyed his job. He had been a fireman for 10 years, and never questioned the pleasure of the midnight runs, nor the joy of watching pages consumed by flames. He never questioned anything, until he met a 17-year-old girl who told him of a past when people were not afraid, and a professor who told him of a future in which people could think. Guy Montag suddenly realized what he had to do.

This book was perfect for audio format. With a lot of exciting pauses to stop at, it was easy to listen to while driving. The reader was not slow or monotone and kept my attention the whole time.

Words are like a road map to reporter Camille Preaker's troubled past. Fresh from a brief stay at a psychiatric hospital, Camille's first assignment from the second-rate daily paper where she works brings her reluctantly back to her hometown to cover the murders of two preteen girls.

    "subtle and disturbing"
    Overall

I ordered this book because of the glowing review by King. I trust him completely and this book did not disapoint. It was slow to build, terrifying and facinating at the same time like a car accident, and an end which in true fashion came with a whimper not a bang.
