I am really disappointed with this book, very boring! definitely a woman's book, it should be labeled as such to keep straight men away from this. written in a sequence of letters, it progressively got more fastidious, at one point all I could hear was blah blah blah blah!
this book is a waste of time and money, i don't know what I was thinking. the main character seems to be a complete imbecile, he cannot intelligently comprehend several things that are obvious and predictable to the reader. poor character development, one minute he's painting lame nature scenes and all of the sudden he takes out a glock with SIX extra clips, yes six!, and starts killing bad guys without flinching or remorse, tha characters are stupid, the story is stupid and I cannot recommend this crap.
I cannot begin to tell you how good this book is! very very fast paced, nonstop page turner, I was unable to stop listening. Excellent main character, cynical, wisecracking, but not annoying, always sticking it to the man, chain smoking, hard liquor drinking, hard boiled, his superiors hated him, his colleagues loved him, the only one with any talent in the whole damn place. Lots of grotesqueness and a little gore and a lot of simultaneous cases, think 5 episodes of Law and Order SUV crammed together, just add a bunch of "sods" "bloody hells" "tarts" "cows" and "flaming" this and thats and you've got yourself a flaming good book!
First off, the narrator, she basically has only one good voice: the main characters (in other words her natural voice). As soon as she tries to make a different character it just sounds fake and sometimes It sounds ridiculous, for example one of the main characters friends (I forgot the characters name) sounds like a retard with a volume problem, and the AI voices were like a robot from the 1950s (thats the ridiculous part) its more than 10,000 years into the future and computers sound like robots? Give me a break. Shouldn't computers sound like lusty supermodels in the future!?! Second, the story is very lacking, I have no idea how this won any awards. The author went WAY too far into the future. Can anyone really imagine what humanity would be like more than 10,000 years into the future? Well the author certainly could not! There was basically no mention of any future technologies except for the space travel. There was no science in this fiction, very disappointing. Listen at your own risk!
the idea of the book is actually very good(nanotecs, Martians, cosmos) but I had a really hard time finishing it. extremely confusing at the beginning, the back and forth felt like a a badly edited movie (eg 21 grams). and the narrator didnt help matters, I couldn't distinguish when the main character was thinking or speaking out loud.
