Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead, serving in the household of the enigmatic Commander and his bitter wife. She may go out once a day to markets whose signs are now pictures because women are not allowed to read. She must pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, for in a time of declining birthrates her value lies in her fertility, and failure means exile to the dangerously polluted Colonies. Offred can remember a time when she lived with her husband and daughter and had a job, before she lost even her own name....

Would you consider the audio edition of The Handmaid's Tale to be better than the print version?

I've read both and enjoyed them both immensely. However, Claire Dane's narration was great. She was apathetic, angry, and tragic with barely a change in her voice. It was well done.

What about Claire Danes’s performance did you like?

I am currently living away from my husband due to our jobs and listening to Claire Danes talk about missing her husband and human touch really resonated with me. It was as if she felt everything I was feeling (except hopefully slightly more dramatic!)

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes!

    Any additional comments?

Very interesting content overall and a very terrifying thought with religious zealots from my parts of the world. Very sensationalized, but also relevant. Very highly recommend.

Jonathan Safran Foer's best-selling debut novel, Everything Is Illuminated, wowed critics on its way to winning several literary prizes, including Book of the Year honors from the Los Angeles Times. It has been published in 24 countries and will soon be a major motion picture. Foer's talent continues to shine in this sometimes hilarious and always heartfelt follow-up.

What made the experience of listening to Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close the most enjoyable?

The story took me back to the events of 9/11 and the horrific imaging. To listen to the events from a child's perspective was gripping.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

It started a little slow, but definitely picked up.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

The book itself is good and I have read the hard copy version. I enjoy listening to audiobooks at work and in the car and thought this would be a good book to listen to while I was busy. However, the narration was so poor, I turned it off after the first 45 minutes. I couldn't listen to any more.

Would you be willing to try another book from E. L. James? Why or why not?

Yes. The author wasn't the issue, it was the narrator.

What didn’t you like about Becca Battoe’s performance?

Tone, voice, accents. All aspects of her narration were poor.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

    Huge disappointment in the narration.
