Frank Herbert's Dune is one of the grandest epics in the annals of imaginative literature. Now Herbert's son, Brian, working with Kevin J. Anderson and using Frank Herbert's own notes, reveals a pivotal epoch in the history of the Dune universe: the Butlerian Jihad, the war that was fought ten thousand years before the events of Dune - the war in which humans wrested their freedom from "thinking machines."

Brian says: "enoyed premise but not execution"
    "Good entertainment"

The book does a good job of its primary purpose, which is to entertain. I enjoyed the character development, and was left waiting for the next part.

In a time long forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons off balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. As the cold returns, sinister forces are massing beyond the protective wall of the kingdom of Winterfell. To the south, the king's powers are failing, with his most trusted advisor mysteriously dead and enemies emerging from the throne's shadow.

Quite possibly in the same class as the Tolkien Trilogy or Dune. A big, multi-volume story with well-developed characters, and tough, plausible story line development, well seasoned with bits of fantasy.
