  • The Black Hole War: My Battle to Make the World Safe for Quantum Mechanics

What happens when something is sucked into a black hole? Does it disappear? Three decades ago, a young physicist named Stephen Hawking claimed that it did - and in doing so, put at risk everything we know about the fundamental laws of the universe. Leonard Susskind and Gerard 't Hooft realized the threat and responded with a counterattack that changed the course of physics.

Matthew says: "Good, but has its flaws"
"A fascinating story which ended too soon"
    Overall

This was the best audiobook I've listened to! Mr Susskind assumes very little physics knowledge but still manages to not talk down to the listener and clearly explain complex concepts. In addition, he has many fascinating, illuminating stories about many of the great luminaries of the physics world, from drinking a beer with Feynman in a small bar in NYC in the 1960s to touring San Francisco's steep hills with Stephen Hawking. This was a great audiobook!

George Smiley, one of the most brilliant spies in the world, is chosen to dig out a mole and destroy him. And so Smiley embarks on his blind night walk, retracing path after path into his own past - its aliases, covers, sleights of hand - burrowing into the dust of unresolved episodes.

This is pretty much the best spy story ever written. Smiley is a classic character who will draw you in as he works to untangle Karla's knot that has tied up the Circus. Delightful - stands up to being listened to over and over and over again.

The Godfather is an extraordinary novel which has become a modern-day classic. Puzo pulls us inside the violent society of the Mafia and its gang wars. The leader, Vito Corleone, is the Godfather. He is a benevolent despot who stops at nothing to gain and hold power.

It's a classic! What more can you say.

I was only familiar with the movie. So hearing this as an audiobook was quite enjoyable... I really did get a new perspective of it.

In her first novel since 2002, Nebula and Hugo award-winning author Connie Willis returns with a stunning, enormously entertaining novel of time travel, war, and the deeds - great and small - of ordinary people who shape history. In the hands of this acclaimed storyteller, the past and future collideand the result is at once intriguing, elusive, and frightening.

Monica says: "Double review - Blackout and All Clear"
    "fantastic!"
    Overall

While I wish there was more Oxford (a la "To Say Nothing of the Dog"), this time traveling tale is classic Connie Willis. I do appreciate the sustained focus on the WWII scenes, as they really draw you in and bring the era to life. The suspense, the mad cap confusion, and all the other elements of her earlier time travel books are all here.

In 1848, the British East India Company, having lost its monopoly on the tea trade, engaged Robert Fortune, a Scottish gardener, botanist, and plant hunter, to make a clandestine trip into the interior of China - territory forbidden to foreigners - to steal the closely guarded secrets of tea horticulture and manufacturing. For All the Tea in China is the remarkable account of Fortune's journeys into China - a thrilling narrative that combines history, geography, botany, natural science, and old-fashioned adventure.
