While at first I found it hard to focus, this book grabbed me and did not let go! I have visited Egypt several times, been a docent at a huge Egyptian exhibit...but this book gave me something I did not have before: an outsiders view of the daily life of the ancient Egyptians. The main character is an educated young man from a neighboring country who is captured by the Egyptian army when his kingdom is overrun. Via his travels and experiences you gain an incredible view of daily life in Egypt. With a happy ending to boot!

It's just a small story really, about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

I listened to this book well over a year ago, and in going through my library, noticed that I hadn't written a review. Not that I write one for every book....BUT even with a year having past - the whole story jumped right into my head. No need to think about the plot. This book leaves an impression that lasts! It is really one of the best!

Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss, and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them, in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul, they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation.

In 1349, one small town in Germany disappeared and was never resettled. Tom, a contemporary historian, and his theoretical-physicist girlfriend, Sharon, become interested. By all logic, the town should have survived, but it didn't. Why? What was special about Eifelheim that it utterly disappeared more than 600 years ago?

For the reviewers who think that the word being said is equivalent to the English word for "he who inherits" - you are mistaken. The German word (this story is taking place in Germany) being used DOES pronounce the "H" and literally means "mister", is often used as an honorific and IS pronounced a bit like the word Hair.

As the Romans invade Britannia, the princess of the great tribe of the Brigantes watches the enemies of her people come ever closer. In the present day, historian Viv Lloyd Rees has immersed herself in the legends surrounding the Celtic queen.

    "Interesting premise, poorly executed."
    Overall

I should have paid more heed to the other reviewers! This book is in serious need of major editing. The characters do indeed stand around wringing their hands - a very frustrating part of most scenes in this book. On the positive side: as other reviewers have stated: the narrator is excellent, and perhaps saves the book. The story is inspired - relive history via "remote viewing"! And the insight (even if only imaginary) into ancient British civilization is tantalizing. I hope that one day a more mature author will give us a more focused treatment of this plot line. Worth reading this one if you can overlook it's flaws.

It is the time of the Crusades: the Islamic world is divided and the Franks have captured the Holy Land. As the mighty Saladin struggles to unite the warring clans of Arabia against the invaders, Khalidah, a young Bedouin woman, finds herself a pawn in a deadly plot involving her own tribe and the powerful Templar Knights. Faced with certain death, she runs away with a man she barely knows, towards adventure and the echoes of a past that somehow connect her to the Jinn.

Very interesting plot involves some ancient sites and societies, plus a bit of romance. As a student of the time period, the Templars and the Crusades - this one seems fairly accurate and adds a bit of invention to keep the plot moving along nicely. I enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading about this time and place.

Richard Mayhew is an unassuming young businessman living in London, with a dull job and a pretty but shrewish fiancée. Then one night he stumbles upon a girl lying on the sidewalk, bleeding. He stops to help her, and his life is changed forever. Soon he finds himself living in a London most people would never have dreamed of: a city of monsters and saints, murderers and angels. It is a world that exists entirely in a subterranean labyrinth of sewer canals and abandoned subway stations.

I rarely give 5 star ratings, but this one was just too good! Interesting plot, great characters, mystery, drama, romance - almost too good to be true! Great read, Great read!

Not being a big Sherlock Holmes fan, I can't remember why I downloaded this book. Even so, I was entertained by the story - and the obvious unusual circumstances of a young woman growing up in the Victorian era, while being mentored by someone like Sherlock Holmes. Nicely read, engaging characters, interesting mystery. A happy read!

This is the true story of how one moment in time, by the thinnest thread of a chance, changed the course of a small boy's life in ways that are beyond description. One day he would dance with some of the greatest ballet companies of the world. One day he would be a friend to a president and first lady, movie stars, and the most influential people in America. One day he would become a star: Mao's last dancer, and the darling of the West.

Having been to China during the time period covered in this book, and more recently - this book seemed very "on point" to me. I enjoyed the pure wonder that the main character - a newcomer to the "west" - experienced in America and would highly recommend this to anyone wishing to take a look behind the "bamboo curtain". Very, very interesting and insightful read.

When a 12-century Sicilian cat burglar snatches a sack of artifacts from the king's geographer's library, the tools and talismans of transmutation, and eternal life, are soon scattered all over the world. Nine hundred years later, a young Connecticut reporter finds evidence that someone is collecting them again.

I loved this book. The characters were fascinating and even if the names are unfamiliar to the American ear, take a little time to get used to them and you won't be disappointed. This book is magic!
