  • Down River: A Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (12 hrs and 21 mins)
    • By John Hart
    • Narrated By Scott Sowers
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Adam Chase has spent the last five years in New York City trying to erase his worst memories and the scorn and abandonment of his family. Then a phone call from his best friend awakens in him a torrent of emotion and pain. Having left North Carolina and its red soil for good, he never thought returning would be easy - and being remembered as a murderer doesn't help much.

    "Best Audiobook Ever"

I listen to a lot of audiobooks, and this is probably the best one I've ever listened to.

DOWN RIVER is a very compelling crime drama, with great writing, dialogue and character depth. A tightly paced thriller, but one that thoroughly explores tragic family and personal relationships. Like a Southern soap opera, but don't let that scare you. Superb narration by Scott Sowers, he does a great job with all the character voices.

Try this one, you won't regret it. I loved it, and thought it well worth the money.

  • The Darkest Evening of the Year

    • UNABRIDGED (9 hrs and 9 mins)
    • By Dean Koontz
    • Narrated By Kirsten Kairos
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

Amy Redwing has dedicated her life to the Southern California organization she founded to rescue abandoned and endangered golden retrievers. Among dog lovers, she's a legend for the risks she'll take to save an animal from abuse. Among her friends, Amy's heedless devotion is often cause for concern. To widower Brian McCarthy, whose commitment she can't allow herself to return, Amy's behavior is far more puzzling and hides a shattering secret.

Fred says: "Dean's got his groove back"

I love Koontz, but this novel just isn't very good. The characters are not very well developed, and Koontz seems more interested in his mentally disturbed villains (over five of them!) than the main heroine Amy Redwing.

The plot moves way too slowly, with many pages where nothing happens. There are a lot of very disturbing scenes (people being murdered casually, children being killed and tortured).

The reader is decent, but can't save this material. I didn't find this a very pleasant listen, and don't recommend it.

  • One God, Three Faiths: Judaism, Christianity, Islam [Portable Professor]

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 11 mins)
    • By F.E. Peters
    • Narrated By F.E. Peters

The covenant that God made with the patriarch Abraham forms the basis of the three religions that today enjoy the largest followings in the world: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Despite the many common bonds among them, however, the Abrahamic religions have had an extremely complicated relationship, frequently defined by conflict, over the course of millennia of coexistence.

    David says: "No Faith Needed"
    "Great Resource"

This series of lectures is a great introduction to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Professor Peters gives the historical origins of each religion, and explains how all three of them interrelate to one another. I found these lectures incredibly informative and entertaining.

  • Power Play

    • UNABRIDGED (8 hrs and 29 mins)
    • By Joseph Finder
    • Narrated By Dennis Boutsikaris
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

When a band of backwoods hunters crash a corporate retreat in the wilderness, executives find themselves held hostage by men who will do anything to get the largest ransom in history. The corporate big shots hadn't wanted junior exec Jake Landry there. But now he's the only one who can save them.

Art says: "I really wanted to give it four stars!"

This audiobook is a huge amount of fun. An exciting thriller, tightly written, with first-rate narration. Starts a little slow, but after the first hour there is hardly a boring moment. A very enjoyable thriller that I would recommend to anybody.

  • Off Armageddon Reef: Safehold Series, Book 1

    • UNABRIDGED (30 hrs and 3 mins)
    • By David Weber
    • Narrated By Oliver Wyman
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

When Earth herself lay under siege by an enemy humankind could not defeat, mankind undertook one last throw of the dice: Operation Ark. Earth's final colonizing expedition was meant to build a new civilization, on a planet so distant even the Gbaba might never find it, and without the high-tech infrastructure whose emissions might betray its location.

Alison says: "David Weber always good"

This was my first experience with David Weber, and I was very disappointed. The character development in this novel was minimal, and the narrative was filled with needless technical descriptions. There are so many different characters in this book (with similar sounding names) that it's easy to get confused. Overall, I found this novel remarkably dry and boring. The narrator does his best, but he can't save this book.
