"Disappointing melodrama"
This book was frustrating. The characters were universally negative, shallow and generally uninteresting. The plot was dark with too many issues resolved by tragedy or violence....as if the author had too many plots and lost her way.
"Pathetic"
I have read and enjoyed Hoag books and thought I'd get another good airplane read. This book is pathetic; I could have written it. Hackneyed plot - totally predictable...shallow, predictable characters, puerile dialogue. I had it in the paper version and threw it away. I'm not even going to finish listening to it...maddeningly terrible. What was Hoag thinking?!
"Great narration not so great book"
I loved the narration of this book. In fact, that's what kept me going. I realize the author is beloved, but so much of the plot seemed to rest on really stupid decisions by the characters, especially the main character who put herself in incredibly dangerous positions and was so impulsive. Actually, a speech by Benny/Bennie at the end was right on point...that she was too impulsive to be a reliable partner...but that was after hours of listening to Mary and The Girls acting brainless...most of the time.
