Carpenter, the Paterson, N.J., lawyer whose wealth allows him to work as seldom as he chooses, is recovering from the loss of the love of his life, Laurie Collins, who has moved home to Findlay, Wis., to become the acting chief of police. When Laurie calls Andy for help after arresting 21-year-old Jeremy Davidson for murders that she thinks he didn't commit, Andy can't resist heading off to Findlay with his faithful dog, Tara.

I've you don't mind the Jersey/New York style humor, this book is pretty good. The problem I had is that the main character has a smart remark for everything he says and it gets annoying in a hurry. Sometimes I wish he'd shut up and tell the story. It reminded me of Billy Crystal when he can't seem to turn off his act. He has to make a stupid remark every time he speaks. Same goes in this book. Beware.

The other thing I didn't like is the way the lead character, Andy, seemed stupid about his investigation work. Twice, he had people on the phone with key information and he says I'll call you back or see you in a few hours. He makes no effort to get the details right away which seems like the obvious thing to do.

The story line was pretty good and I thought the best part of the book was the last few chapters.

If you don't mind the main character making wise cracks every time he opens his mouth, you might like this book. Otherwise, leave it for the folks in Jersey.

Former Secret Service agents turned private investigators Sean King and Michelle Maxwell have seen their lives splinter around them. Michelle lies unconscious in a hospital bed after a night of suicidal violence. And Sean is forced to take on a thankless investigation into the murder of a scientist just inside the CIA's razor-wire fence near Williamsburg, Virginia. But they will need to team up again to stop a conspiracy of traitors operating in the shadow of the White House itself.

    "Weak character development"
    Overall

This was my first book by this author and I was disappointed. The main problem I had was that the character development was weak. The main characters were willing to die for others and the book barely developed the relationship or the other characters. Sean and Mic go on a suicide mission for Vigi when they hardly know the girl!
The main characters are private investigators, for hire, and they are basically going on a suicide mission and breaking into a CIA camp??? Silly assumptions and difficult to believe.

I thought this book had some good action at a few points but it was poorly stitched together.
I have to agree with some of the other reviews and say this book was hard to believe at points and not worth listening to or reading.

I wouldn't recommend it given the much better choices out there. For example, read Michael Connelly's book Echo Park and you'll see the clear difference between a well written book and one which was thrown together.

Neal Stephenson is a blazing new force on the sci-fi scene. With the groundbreaking cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, he has "vaulted onto the literary stage." It weaves virtual reality, Sumerian myth, and just about everything in between with a cool, hip cybersensibility - in short, it is the gigathriller of the information age.

    A. Tuck says: "Classic Stephenson"
    "Concepts-are-us"
    Overall

The author presented a lot of interesting concepts and my favorite was the Meta-verse. This is a really cool and potentially realizable concept but I felt the auther didn't develop or exploit it enough.

The book contains a bunch of interesting ideas poorly stitched together and under-developed. Lots of loose ends and too many new terms... the "Nanshub of Enky".

I gave it two stars instead of one because there were times when I enjoyed the book for a few chapters. I almost stopped listening to the book in the beginning but fought my way through it.

"Wow! This audio book is fantastic!"
    Overall

This book was fantastic! Both the story and the reader made it one of my most enjoyable audiobooks. Just when you thought the book was getting predictable, Grisham weaved in a twist that kept you glued to your seat. I especially enjoyed the readers ability to sound out the various characters. My favorite was the defense lawyer Leo Drummon (spelling?). The slow southern way of speaking was classic. A can't say enough good about this book.
