    In the early 1950s, an eleven-year-old boy in Colombo boards a ship bound for England. At mealtimes he is seated at the “cat’s table” - as far from the Captain’s Table as can be - with a ragtag group of “insignificant” adults and two other boys, Cassius and Ramadhin. As the ship makes its way across the Indian Ocean, through the Suez Canal, into the Mediterranean, the boys tumble from one adventure to another, bursting all over the place like freed mercury.

    What did you like best about The Cat's Table? What did you like least?

    I love Ondaatje's characters and he develops a good story. I wish I could have enjoyed it more and would have with a better reader.


    Would you recommend The Cat's Table to your friends? Why or why not?

    I may read the book and then decide.


    What didn’t you like about Michael Ondaatje’s performance?

    I have heard MO in person and he is a compelling speaker. As a reader he is difficult to follow -- far too soft and rather flat in his presentation. Such a shame.


    Was The Cat's Table worth the listening time?

    No - it was hard to follow because of the poor presentation.

    If you could sum up Suspect in three words, what would they be?

    If you love dogs and a good mystery you will love this. The story is told from different perspectives - and the dog's is fascinating. We all wonder what our dogs are thinking - now we know!


    Who was your favorite character and why?

    Maggie the dog is dedicated, damaged, caring, fun - a perfect character


    What about MacLeod Andrews’s performance did you like?

    Andrews gets it just right! You know the characters but he doesn't overplay - particularly when he speaks for the dog.

    This is a thought-provoking and very moving true story. I learned so much about the morality and complications of medical research! It is also a story of some amazing people - Deborah is a true character and inspiration. It would be good for everyone to read this and come to their own conclusions on the future of cell research. After this book, you will have a greater knowledge of the issues - personal and scientific.

    Unquestionnably Deborah.

    The perspective of life in Saudi Arabia - the role of women.


    Who was your favorite character and why?

    Nayir - his knowledge of the desert and the fact that, while being very traditional, he is able to be open to the changes around him - particularly those of the roles of women.

    Nouf's sister.

    Only that I have been telling everyone I know to read it.


    Any additional comments?

    Unique approach by a detective, dealing with the death of a young woman, in a totally "veiled" society. I feel that everyone should read this for a better understanding of this part of the world.

    What did you like best about In the Shadow of the Banyan? What did you like least?

    The story is told by a young princess of Cambodia which gives it a different perspective of the Cambodian "Killing Fields." It is a tribute to survival and has some compelling characters, but it gets lost in poetic wanderings.
