This could have been an excellent book if the author had cut out 90% of the graphic detail of the abused child and her masturbation habits! At the end of the book she laments why her book is not allowed in schools and the fact that a teacher that did allow it in her class was fired. Sadly her very valuable message has been lost in her over emphasis of the victim child and her habit of masturbation. Just as in the real world individuals who indulge don't constantly talk about it to all and sundry so the author should have been more aware and sensitive in this area. It is entirely the authors fault that her book is rejected in the school arena and her valuable message is lost. Having said all this, the narrator did an absolutely excellent job. I will look out for other books read by her!
This is an excellent starting point if you know very little about the Ancient Romans and want to learn, in a nutshell, the real story. Most of us know the names Caesar, Nero, Caligula ... with the associated tags. e.g. Caesar crossed the Rubicon - Nero fiddled whilst Rome burned - Caligula married his sister then killed her!
These lectures provide a wonderfully simple springboard from which to venture into a more in depth study of the fascinating Ancient Romans!
The Power of One was such a classic and a very much loved book that I have read a number of times over the years. When I heard that Bryce had sadly passed away I was moved to read something else written by him so I purchased this Title. I found the history aspect of the novel really interesting, especially the early days of Van Dieman's Land. However, I was disappointed in the story itself as it moved far too slowly with absolutely nothing happening at times. Apart from the two main protagonists, I could not get into the other various characters who seemed to me to be contrived and just not 'believable'. As much as I wanted to love this book I couldn't and won't be purchasing the rest of the triology.
This is the best book I've listened to for quite some time. How I wish someone would make a DVD series. A movie would be too short to capture it all.
I fell in love with all the characters, I laughed and I cried. The way he wove the many character's stories together was brilliant! The narration was excellent! As soon as I finished the audio I ordered the book, I simply must have it in my library.
At first it seemed to be going somewhere but I got to about chapter three and, for me, it fell apart. Rule one of a story = keep it believable! I mean neither of the daughters (in their forties by now, I might add) have yet figured out that their Mother has a dark past which is influencing her current behviour. Duh! It slaps us, the reader, in the face but they are so vacuous they are oblivious? Sorry, just can't go on with this book!
What else can I say? Those characters, those voices !! I lived it !!
I relished this book from the first line to the last! What an absolute pleasure! Three days after finishing it and the characters are still living inside my head. Its hard to settle into my next novel when everything is still so vivid and real! If you loved Downton Abbey, you'll love this. And in terms of the narrator, please don't let the detractors put you off, she was just perfect!
This book was not all that it was media hyped up to be. It was irritating that the protagonists were repeatedly referred to by their surnames. The plot was incredulous at times and some of the complex unravelling hard to follow. Not for me, I won't be getting the rest in the series. Although the narration was good.
Absolutely, such a joy !!
I lived it !
Enzo ! Such a wise soul !
Oh dear, I miss Enzo !! This book was a joy from the first word to the last !
Way too many facts and no human interest aspects
Would have been better with a French speaker but having said that, nobody could do much with the overwhelming details and absence of the human feelings and emotions that must have gone on during this period
