Jack Ryan has only just moved back into the Oval Office when he is faced with a new international threat. An aborted coup in the People's Republic of China has left President Wei Zhen Lin with no choice but to agree with the expansionist policies of General Su Ke Quiang. They have declared the South China Sea a protectorate and are planning an invasion of Taiwan. The Ryan administration is determined to thwart China’s ambitions, but the stakes are dangerously high as a new breed of powerful Chinese anti-ship missiles endanger the US Navy's plans to protect the island.

What did you like best about this story?

Lately, I have to read Clancy books twice to be able to follow it. This book had fewer characters to try to follow.

    Any additional comments?

While this book didn't have the magic of his earlier books, it was still an interesting book.

As the conflict grows closer, the roads become impassable and Howard also comes across five more children who need his help. He ends up leading this motley group of youngsters through the French countryside, constantly beset by danger yet heroically protecting his charges.

I was looking forward to this book as I have loved other books by him, but the narration was terrible. He is one of those narrators who varies his speech from 2 decibels to 90 decibels in the same sentence. So if you want to hear everything, you have to have the volume cranked way up. Then you get blasted out by the loud volume seconds later. I gave up after 10 minutes.

A 39-year-old with Asperger’s syndrome and obsessive-compulsive disorder, Edward Stanton lives alone on a rigid schedule in the Montana town where he grew up. His carefully constructed routine includes tracking his most common waking time (7:38 a.m.), refusing to start his therapy sessions even a minute before the appointed hour (10:00 a.m.), and watching one episode of the 1960s cop show Dragnet each night (10:00 p.m.). But when a single mother and her nine-year-old son move in across the street, Edward’s timetable comes undone....

The jungle he and Harv are about to land in is the same one that Nathan barely escaped with his life decades before, an ordeal that left him physically and psychologically scarred.

I really enjoyed the first 2 books of this series. Book 3 really started to drag, and this book in painfully boring. Nothing happens. An hour at a time of useless details followed by 3 minutes of action. Dick Hill's reading is always way slower than it should be. His slow reading combined with the minutiae laden dialogue makes this a book too painful to finish.

Mexican drug cartels are shooting up the streets of Laredo and El Paso. Somali pirates are holding three U.S. tankers for ransom. The President of the United States is fed up and, as Commander in Chief, has what he thinks is a pretty bright idea — to get hold of Colonel Charley Castillo and his merry band and get them on the case. Unfortunately, that will be difficult. Everybody knows that the President hates Castillo’s guts, and has just had him forcibly retired from the military, and now Castillo’s men are scattered far and wide, many of them in hiding.

Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: his sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.

Though his books are hit and miss these days, I will usually give them a try.

Was Merry Christmas, Alex Cross worth the listening time?

It was just OK. Nothing special, but maybe a good book for a long drive.

  • The Black Box: Harry Bosch, Book 18

In a case that spans 20 years, Harry Bosch links the bullet from a recent crime to a file from 1992, the killing of a young female photographer during the L.A. riots. Harry originally investigated the murder, but it was then handed off to the Riot Crimes Task Force and never solved. Now Bosch's ballistics match indicates that her death was not random violence, but something more personal, and connected to a deeper intrigue. Like an investigator combing through the wreckage after a plane crash, Bosch searches for the "black box", the one piece of evidence that will pull the case together.

Would you listen to The Black Box again? Why?

Sure, a couple of years from now.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes, it was actually rather unpredictable. It was nice to have a Quality book that I didn't want to stop reading after all the other turkeys I have read recently.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I got a few laughs out of it.

    Any additional comments?

Michael Connelly seems to be able to come up with fresh stories every book. I have been disappointed by several of my favorite authors recently (Tom Clancy, James Patterson, Nelson Demille) , but Connelly and and few others (John Sandford, Ken Follett, Vince Flynn) are still putting out 4 and 5 star books.

Pastor Kyle Idleman doesn't just want to be a fan of Jesus, he wants to full heartedly commit to him and be a follower of Jesus. But how can you make the leap from fan to follower? In Not a Fan Idleman uses biblical examples to show how the people who met Jesus also had to decide if they were fans or followers, and what it meant for them to then become followers.
