  • Evolution: The Remarkable History of a Scientific Theory

Edward J. Larson is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and eminent science historian. This marvelously readable, yet sumptuously erudite work traces the development of the scientific theory of evolution. From Darwin's essential trip to the Galápagos, to the most contemporary studies in sociobiology, this work takes listeners both into the field and laboratories of the world's greatest evolutionary scientists, and shows how the theory of evolution has itself evolved.

    Brad says: "An Excellent History!"
    "good audio but slightly boring"
    Overall

The audio presentation itself was excellent, but the book was not what I hoped. I thought it would have much more about current scientific discoveries. Instead it was more about the history of the conflict between religion and evolution. If you're interested in that topic, the reader is very engaging.

What did you like best about Catching Fire? What did you like least?

Unfortunately, the story line begins to really deteriorate after Hunger Games. The conflicts are repetitive, and the main charcter goes from a resourceful and interesting person to just another stupid, emotional teenage girl. She's an idiot, and the male characters aren't, which I found extremely annoying. Read the first one, but skip numbers 2 and 3.

You are presumably looking here for clues to the shocking conclusion of this terminal audiobook, or the ending of the end. The end of the end is the best place to begin the end, because if you listen to the end from the beginning of the beginning of the end to the end of the end of the end, you will arrive at the end of the end of your rope.

    W. Black says: "Tim Curry makes a dreadful end nearly enjoyable"
    "weak ending"
    Overall

Tim Curry is, as always, wonderful, but this was a disappointing end to the series. After all the mysterious buildup, you get almost no information about what has really been going on. While I understand leaving some questions unanswered, leaving them all unanswered was a weak ending to an enjoyable series.

  • The Good Husband of Zebra Drive: The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency

In the life of Precious Ramotswe, a woman duly proud of her fine traditional build, there is rarely a dull moment, and in the latest installment in the universally beloved No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series, there is much happening on Zebra Drive and Tlokweng Road. Mma Ramotswe is experiencing staffing difficulties. Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni asks to be put in charge of a case involving an errant husband. But can a man investigate such matters as successfully as the number-one lady detective can?

Joanne says: "#1 Ladies continued enjoyment"
    "pretty good but not great"
    Overall

First, the narrator of this book was fabulous, just the right intonations and subtle humor. It was really well done. However, I liked this book the least of the series so far. The solution to the mystery and the resolution of one of the plot lines were implausible in a way that the other stories have not been. That said, this is always an enjoyable series, but I wouldn't start with this one.

  • The Fourth Bear: A Nursery Crime

The Gingerbreadman, psychopath, sadist, genius, and killer, is on the loose. But it isn't Jack Spratt's case. He and Mary Mary have been demoted to Missing Persons following Jack's poor judgment involving the poisoning of Mr. Bun the baker. Missing Persons looks like a boring assignment until a chance encounter leads them into the hunt for missing journalist Henrietta "Goldy" Hatchett, star reporter for The Daily Mole.

    "very clever"
    Overall

This book was witty and a lot of fun. I enjoy the Jack Spratt series even more than the Thursday one. The narrator was engaging--an all-around great audiobook experience.
