In a burnished, driving prose, incorporating a myriad of fresh sources, John Keegan tells the story of the Allies' greatest military achievement as he chronicles the 1944 invasion of Normandy, from D-Day to the liberation of Paris.

Jay says: "Not for the casual WWII reader"
    "Very detailed but worth it."
    Overall

There is so much detail, especially on the names and locations of the units involved what I wished a better knowldge of French geography. I did enjoy when he broke off to tell the history of a countries involvement or the political situation that lead them to this point. I found the description of how Paris was eventually taken very interesting. Over all I think it was worth the time and certainly gave me a much firmer understanding of the landings.

Only the most desperate colonists dare to make a new home on Hellhole. Reeling from a recent asteroid impact, tortured with horrific storms, tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, and churning volcanic eruptions, the planet is a dumping ground for undesirables, misfits, and charlatans…but also a haven for dreamers and independent pioneers. Against all odds, an exiled general named Adolphus has turned Hellhole into a place of real opportunity for the desperate colonists who call the planet their home.

Dan says: "Very Good Series Intro"
    "Cliff hanger alert!"
    Overall

They need to be much clearer that this is the first book in a series that is not even going to try and make it so it stands alone.

I personally think this is sloppy… you have to resolve “something” to make it satisfying.

  • Destiny Disrupted: A History of the World through Islamic Eyes

Until about 1800, the West and the Islamic realm were like two adjacent, parallel universes, each assuming itself to be the center of the world while ignoring the other. As Europeans colonized the globe, the two world histories intersected and the Western narrative drove the other one under. The West hardly noticed, but the Islamic world found the encounter profoundly disrupting.

Blake says: "Explains the clash between Islam and the West"
    "Lots of little known information"
    Overall

I thought the author did a great job of laying out the time line.

Jack Welch knows how to win. During his 40-year career at General Electric, he led the company to year-after-year success around the globe, in multiple markets, against brutal competition. His honest, be-the-best style of management became the gold standard in business, with his relentless focus on people, teamwork, and profits.

    A User says: "Jack's Alltime-Best"
"Have quoted this a lot lately"
    Overall

Have always worked for small companies where I never had the benefit of the kind mentoring or meetings where this kind of knowledge is passed down. While I have struggled with his concepts of frankness and performance based evaluations I found the book very useful.

I have quoted this book extensively over the last several months and it has definitely helped.

I always struggle with some of these business bio books as to whether they are just “I am so great” exercises, but it’s not like he was running a dairy queen.
