Great book. Great story. But his whole passion was for the woman he loved and when they found each other again, the book very unceremoniously ends. That being said, it was the only disappointment.
One of the best books I have listened to and absolutely THE BEST NARRATOR. Edward Herrmann made you feel like you were in the boat for every race.
Incredible story of survival. Never heard of the USS Jennette before but now will never forget it. Narrator was excellent.
This is a puff piece for Christianity cloaked in a hunt for archeological antiquity and just to drive the cliche home, in the end there is a grand conversion by the main character. To add insult to injury the narrators Italian accent is ready made to a Disney cartoon. I wish that Audible would create a separate catagory for these axe grinding books.
Quite interesting but the best example of why authors shouldn't narrate their own book. So monotone. Maybe it would be better to "read" this book.
This book was like listening to ice freeze. Booooooring. First of all, the same three or four day travesty is told several times with minor deviations by several different people so at points you think: "I've heard this before. Did I accidentally hit rewind?" Second, the narrator whispers the book as if he is hiding in a closet. Great is you want a nap. Third, by the time you get to the only interesting part of the book, the end, it is disappointing and anti-climatic. Leaves you hanging . . . . . . . by the neck!
This is a great listen. I am not into fantasy but this feels more like History with a whimsical twist. You'll love it.
Can't believe I made it through the whole thing hoping for anything new or creative. Nothing. Zero. Amateurish. To make it worse the narrators accents were comical. The Italians and the Russians sounded like Bela Lugosi.
I took a deep breath at the very beginning and didn't exhale until the end of the book. Not for the faint of heart. Keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout. Narrator couldn't be better. I felt as though I was listening to the main character tell his story with every bit of emotion from scene to scene. You will not be disappointed. See other reviews for more detail if you want or just trust and download and listen.
I loved this book but then I'm a history junkie. Didn't hurt that I have read biographies on FDR and Truman as well. Long but then I didn't want it to end. Nasaw dispelled some of the Joe Kennedy myths for me and now I am even more impressed with this incredibly productive man and his family. Additionally, Hillgartner's reading was excellent. Loved the accents.
Couldn't get through it. Like walking in mud. I hope it ended well but I did not have the patience. Love George Guidall but even he couldn't make this sing.
