At 23, Ruth Saunders headed west with her 70-year-old grandma in tow, hoping to be hired as a television writer. Four years later, she's hit the jackpot when she gets The Call: the sitcom she wrote, The Next Big Thing, has gotten the green light, and Ruthie's going to be the show-runner. But her dreams of Hollywood happiness are threatened by demanding actors, number-crunching executives, an unrequited crush on a boss, and her grandmother's impending nuptials.

Would you listen to The Next Best Thing again? Why?

Yes. Really liked and related to the characters. Loved the insider information on how tv shows are made.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Ruth. She makes the same mistakes all young women make when starting out = and learns from them. You root for her and in the end, she wins.

Have you listened to any of Olivia Thirlby’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Never heard her before, but I will look for her again.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. I liked the book immensely but wanted to take it in and process the story in pieces.

    Any additional comments?

Real dialogue. Believable characters. Fun to hear the back story of life in Hollywood.

Atticus O’Sullivan, last of the Druids, lives peacefully in Arizona, running an occult bookshop and shape-shifting in his spare time to hunt with his Irish wolfhound. His neighbors and customers think that this handsome, tattooed Irish dude is about twenty-one years old - when in actuality, he’s twenty-one centuries old. Not to mention: He draws his power from the earth, possesses a sharp wit, and wields an even sharper magical sword known as Fragarach, the Answerer. Unfortunately, a very angry Celtic god wants that sword, and he’s hounded Atticus for centuries....

Would you listen to Hounded again? Why?

Yes. It was entertaining, with enough of a mix of mystical and action.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Luke Daniels?

Maybe. I liked his voice, but the lack of emotion made the book lose something. Atticus' voice needs more of an attitude and sense of humor.

.Lucas Davenport has seen many terrible murder scenes. This is one of the worst. In the small Minnesota town of Deephaven, an entire family has been killed - husband, wife, two daughters, dogs. There’s something about the scene that pokes at Lucas’s cop instincts - it looks an awful lot like the kind of scorched-earth retribution he’s seen in drug killings sometimes. But this is a seriously upscale town, and the husband was an executive vice president at a big bank. It just doesn’t seem to fit.

Would you consider the audio edition of Stolen Prey to be better than the print version?

No, I think the print and audio versions are both excellent. Print lets you go back and review events and mull them over. Audio adds an extra level of excitement.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Letty - by far! Keeps her horrible childhood and doesn't let it determine her future in life. Learns from her past and triumphs.

Have you listened to any of Richard Ferrone’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Also loved Richard Ferrone's "The Burglar" series about Bernie Rhodenbarr. Consistently excellent.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    No.

    Any additional comments?

Just really enjoyed it. Great book, wonderful performance.

It is Nick and Amy Dunne's fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick's clever and beautiful wife disappears from their rented McMansion on the Mississippi River. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn't doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media - as well as Amy's fiercely doting parents - the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he's definitely bitter - but is he really a killer?

    Story
Is there anything you would change about this book?

Edit it down by at least a third. Too much on and on, worrying about things just way out of control. So twisted and just can't catch a break. Needs a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The best thing about this book was the exciting twists in the plot. It feels like you begin to root for one person, only to have everything you thought turn out to be wrong. But after the first couple of times, even this device becomes annoying. Get on with it!The beginning shows promise and the first big twist had me yelling out loud. And in the end, everyone is just miserable. No one gets what they want. No one is happy or even satisfied. All that agony, but for what?

What about Julia Whelan and Kirby Heyborne ’s performance did you like?

Performance was good. Easy to listen to and follow the action.

Was Gone Girl worth the listening time?

It was worth the first half of the listening time. Just way to long. By part 3 I was wishing I was doe already.

Deep in the stacks of Oxford's Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library.

The author definitely did her research - lots of historical facts, literary quotes, etc. but the conversations are awkward and fake. The characters never really grab your attention or get you invested in their stories. This book is mildly interesting but I won't read Harkness again.

Where there’s smoke there’s fire, and no one knows this better than New Jersey bounty hunter Stephanie Plum. Dead bodies are showing up in shallow graves on the empty construction lot of Vincent Plum Bail Bonds. No one is sure who the killer is, or why the victims have been offed, but what is clear is that Stephanie’s name is on the killer’s list. Short on time to find evidence proving the killer’s identity, Stephanie faces further complications when her family and friends decide that it’s time for her to choose between her longtime off-again-on-again boyfriend and the other bad boy in her life....

The pacing is better, the comedy is not so outlandish and the story has a good flow. Excellent beach read. Just wish Evanovich would have Stephanie pick a guy or decide to stay single. As a Jersey girl, I totally understand the Trenton and family dilemma.

Pretty good book. The characters are interesting and mostly believable. The setting in New York works with the story but the lives are pretty superficial and it is hard to really get involved. Would make a good beach read. Not as good as "Last Night at the Chateau Marmont".

The creator and executive producer of Everybody Loves Raymond dissects the art of comedy and the making of a sitcom classic. In television, where programs can premiere and disappear in the same week, Everybody Loves Raymond reigned as America's best-loved show for nine years with more than 17 million viewers. As the number-one sitcom, it received more than 70 Emmy nominations, including two wins for best comedy.

What a great book! Interesting, funny, good pace. The inside information and stories are just hysterical and now you can understand why this show ran 9 seasons. Phil Rosenthal is a guy you would want to get to know. So worth the listen.
Only drawback are the long silent gaps that hinder the enjoyment of the book and throw the pace off - I don't know why they did that.
