Born in a South Africa divided by racism and hatred, this one small boy will come to lead all the tribes of Africa. Through enduring friendships with Hymie and Gideon, Peekay gains the strength he needs to win out. And in a final conflict with his childhood enemy, the Judge, Peekay will fight to the death for justice.

    "My favorite book"
    Overall

I saw the movie version in school in 10th grade nearly 10 years ago. The story always stuck with me. When I begin teaching I vowed that my students would see the movie. Now I vow that they will read the book. I give them the audio version to listen to and I have shown the movie for several years. Bryce's books are not published in the U.S. so listen to all of them. I have ordered some in hard copy from the UK.

You will never regret listening to this book. The narration is amazing. I listen to anything Bower records. This book stays in my heart all of the time and I re-listen to it whenever I need strength.

Bryce's writing is descriptive with out being superfluous. His mastery of the written word is without compare.

Listen to all of his books (Sylvia is a different narrator) and you will be the better for it!

  • A Prayer for Owen Meany

Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

There were scenes that I laughed to hard I cried-- while driving.

The narration of this book is divine. I recommended this book to another audiophile before I even finished it.
