Middlemarch is a recognized masterpiece that explores the complex social world of 19th century England. It is concerned with the lives of several ordinary people, albeit ones with high social standing. The novel explores the very fabric of Victorian society in the 1800s, showing how various human passions, heroism, egotism, love, and lust, interrelate within this society.

    Overall

Well, God help poor Wendy. This is a brilliant reading of one of the greatest works of fiction in the English language. In fact, I have regretted that Ms. Reading hasn't recorded more of the works of great writers, such as this one, and fewer of the middling popular fiction titles that are on her list. She has a tremendous gift, apparently is a gifted actress under a different name, and her talent for creating characters shows as she brings to life an entire village of characters in Middlemarch. I read this book every decade or so -- and I'm hard put to it to say which experience, reading or listening, is more thrilling when the recording is as good as this one is. I wish Ms. Reading would read all of the works of Jane Austen and Anthony Trollope, and I would love to hear her reading of Wolf Hall by Hillary Mantel.

In one of the most popular novels in English literature, excitement begins to fizz in the Bennett household when young and eligible Mr. Charles Bingley rents the house nearby, and brings along his haughty and even wealthier friend, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy. While Mr. Darcy irks the vivacious Elizabeth, the second of the five Bennett girls, Elizabeth annoys Mr. Darcy.

    Overall

I have listened to Kate Reading's narrations of Pride and Prejudice, and of Middlemarch, and after these many hours I still am amazed by the versatility of her beautiful voice. She creates entire English families and villages, and when a Redding narration is finished the listener is so sorry to say goodbye to these characters, made real by this voice. My only objection to Kate Reading (aka Kate Redding on some websites) is that she hides her light under a bushel by recording too many titles that are not worthy of her skill. I assume she needs to be paid for her work as much as the next person and maybe she is driven to some choices by the need for more lucrative royalties. But so few readers can do what she does: she has a moral obligation not stop until she has recorded all of Austen (Persuasion, please1) and Trollope and Dickens and the Brontes!
