This book was a pleasant surprise. I tried to like book one. It showed a lot of promise but left me unfulfilled on several levels, but I saw hints of the story to come. This book was worth the wait. The story flowed better, the narration was better and I am now really looking forward to book 3 which is downloading as I write this.
It is difficult to write a review of one part...one book of this deeply involved story. Only in retrospect after completing the whole series can you see the nuance and skill by which this installment was woven into the whole. There is conflict, action, romance, magic and epic warfare. You will not be disappointed but read it all, in order. Then read it again for the subtleties you missed.
Initially I couldn't decide if I wanted to spend my credits on this book. It's another assassin story in a fantasy medieval world. I think I made the right decision.
Overall, it's a good story. There are several problems that keep jarring me out of the story and back into reality. There have been many times I've stopped and said to myself "That idea/scenario came directly from _______.
The dialog drives me crazy. There is way too much "He said", "She said" I couldn't believe an editor allowed it to remain. I kept thinking this must be the author's first book.
While the reader is certainly competent, often I find the cadence of the performance jarring and the inflection on the word "shadow" gets tiresome. I thought it must be something the reader affected until I heard the word "window."
Despite these problems I find the story very compelling. There are times I feel the author has done an excellent job of giving us a graphic explanation of the horror of certain situations and just how evil some of the characters are. I want to know what happens next and I liked it well enough to go ahead and purchase the second book in the series. I know at this point I will also need to get the third.
