The complete "box set" of T. H. White's epic fantasy novel of the Arthurian legend. The novel is made up of five parts: "The Sword in the Stone", "The Witch in the Wood", "The Ill-Made Knight", "The Candle in the Wind", and "The Book of Merlyn".

Is there anything you would change about this book?

it is simply too long; would be better abridged. You can't skip paragraphs in an audiobook and so much of what is read is not relevant to the main storyline.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

I have been listening for a very time and STILL haven't reached any where near the end. I read this book as a child and can't imagine how I had the patience.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

    Yes

Was The Once and Future King worth the listening time?

    No

    Any additional comments?

I remember the book fondly, and I am sure I would be much more appreciative of an abridged version. I am enjoying the characters, King Pellinore is adorable and i want to see what happens to him

Detective-Inspector Napoleon Bonaparte leaves his familiar outback environment for Melbourne and a nearby mountain resort on special assignment for Military Intelligence. Although out of his element among city people, Bony displays his characteristic skills to interpret some puzzling clues and catch a murderer - providing the ingredients for another fascinating Arthur Upfield mystery.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

set in Australia post WW2 Bony, with his half aboriginal heritage, is unique in the detective arena.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Bony - always so smooth

Have you listened to any of Peter Hosking’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Yes, many. He has an unusual style that suits these books, sounding slightly old-fashioned in his speech, but as the books are slightly old-fashioned, it works well.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not in its unabridged version-too long!

    Any additional comments?

Arthur Upfield is very precise in his descriptions, which can be wordy at times, but he gets away with it. His Outback mysteries, especially, have vivid portrayals of life and the desert country, for rich and poor, black and white. Even so, they are still a cracking good whodunnit.

For three generations the family-run auction houses of the Dashwoods and the Kings have been fierce rivals. The grandparents Henry Dashwood and Edward King were once best friends, despite their different backgrounds. Best friends until they fell for the same girl Eleanor Faraday eventually picked Henry but the seeds had been sown for a bitter feud that flourished between the two clans for over six decades.

Would you listen to Folly again? Why?

Always nice to listen to Alan reading his own books

What did you like best about this story?

The way it switched from the past to the present; two stories in one

What does the narrator bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

His relaxed style and the fondness for his characters. He really sounds as though he likes these people and forgives their foibles

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

yes, but to say what it was would be a spoiler - good thing I had tissues in the car

    Any additional comments?

Never been a book of Alan's that I haven't liked. They are always charming.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I can't imagine, maybe a Dr Who fanatic? This was very much the old-style Doctor.

Would you ever listen to anything by Colin Meek again?

Maybe, but I would listen very carefully before buying

How could the performance have been better?

the acting was very uneven, from good, eg Stephen Fry to dreadful eg all the supporting cast

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    I've racked my brain, but...no.

    Any additional comments?

I much prefer the new Doctor Who, all of them, so I will pay attention when shopping.
