How refreshing to listen to a historical romance without having to wade through passion scenes. Yes, perhaps it was a little predictable, but aren't all of the romances? Not wondering when I was going to have to sensor or fast forward was a blessing.
I loved the first story. And so I overlooked some of the wooden narration of the female narrator. But in this book, it is painful. In some places Aiko Nakasone's narration is so poor, it reminds me of a grade school student struggling to read in a classroom. This story in the sequence gets bogged down in political details, I see book three is the same narrator, I don't think I'll ever listen to it unless I can get it for free.
After the mediocrity of the fourth book, I was hesitant to have too high hopes for this one, but Darynda Jones has matched the spirit of First Grave on the Right. The long range plot thickens and the gorgeous Reyes and Charlie are more firmly linked. If you loved the first 2 books, you'll love this one!
I listened a few weeks ago and am still struck by how annoyed I was that the story could have been great, but instead, I felt cheated by multiple poorly written sex scenes. I enjoy a little passion, but after a while it just felt raunchy. And I really did want the story to be better, but now I won't follow up on the series.
The Countess has some likeable characters, and an enjoyable plot. However, this read is sadly lacking in historical context. The dialog was too modern to be believable. Situations were plausible, but not carried out well. However, it did make for a low key light listen.
I have always enjoyed the Joe Pike/ Elvis Cole series. Joe Pike's mysterious background and personality have always kept my interest. This book gives a deep look into Joe's background. This book was more serious and lacked a lot of Elvis' usual humor, but it was appropriate to the book.
