I would definitely recommend this book. Stephen White does an excellent job of developing his characters and making the reader care about them while building a suspenseful story. The way he describes people and events is skillfully done.
Alan Gregory carries the story in this book and shows us many sides of a complex personality.
I thought this performance was one of the best I've ever listened to. When a narrator makes you forget that he's providing the voices for all of the characters, both male and female, that's a job well-done!
My husband and I listened to this book on a long road trip and were anxious to get back to it after every stop.
Although the ending took me by surprise and was a very interesting way to handle one of the story lines in the book, it left me wondering about a few of the other story lines that seemed to be left hanging. Of course I'm sure the intention is to keep the reader coming back for the next book, but I would have preferred a little more resolution to some of the other characters' issues.
When I purchased this title, it wasn't clear to me from the description that it was primarily instruction on meditation--hours and hours of instruction on meditation. If this is what someone desires, it is well done. Much of the recording is silence as the listener is taught various meditation practices. I liked the narrator's voice and style of presenting the material, but this type of audio book was not at all what I was expecting and not what I wanted for the type of listening I do (e.g., useless while driving).
I love dog stories and listen to many. This was one I particularly enjoyed. I guess it helps that I listened to it at Christmas time, but I think it would be enjoyable at any time of year. The story is good and the narrator did a great job with the characters. Although a little predictable, there were a few unexpected events and it held my interest. It is a great story for kids-- I plan to buy it in hard copy for my grandson next Christmas.
I love dogs and dog stories and have listened to many. This one was not one of the more emotionally compelling ones, but the writing was good (although a bit challenging to get used to) and I learned a lot of "dog stuff" I didn't know. The owner's love for his dog is clearly and touchingly described. Worth a listen.
This is of the best dog stories ever! The adventures, challenges and love shared by the author and his wonderful little dog, Atticus, kept me captivated from beginning to end.
I hesitated to purchase this book since I'm not a big fan of "fantasy" books, but decided to get it for a long road trip. Once I started listening, I was immediately caught up in the action and couldn't stop listening. The story is captivating and compelling and the performance is stellar. I was continually amazed at the author's creativity and skill at drawing me in and making me feel as if I'd actually been at the Circus. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I did not find it slow at all. The characters came alive from the very start and I couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen next. This is a book to sink into and let your imagination have free rein. It definitely exceeded my expectations.
