After being thrown out of the window of his luxury apartment, science-fiction writer Allen Carpentier wakes to find himself at the gates of Hell. Feeling he's landed in a great opportunity for a book, he attempts to follow Dante's road map. Determined to meet Satan himself, Carpentier treks through the nine circles of Hell, led by Benito Mussolini, and encounters countless mental and physical tortures.

What did you love best about Inferno?

A modern-day journey through hell with Benito Mussolini as your guide? What could be more bizarre. Revisiting this story 45 years after I first read it? Priceless! Listening to if after re-reading Dante's Inferno? The best.

What other book might you compare Inferno to and why?

Dante's Inferno, of course. This is a bizarre twist on that tale with a science fiction writer as the protagonist.

What about Tom Weiner’s performance did you like?

This was a pretty straight-forward reading. There really wasn't anything special about it.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, because I was paying close attention to correct my 45-year-old memory of this book.

    Any additional comments?

I don't know whether this book is a classic or not, but was a great read. A journey of growth on a trip through hell. Even though hell isn't real and there is no life after death, it's a great topic for fiction.

From the larger, louder half of the world-famous magic duo Penn & Teller comes a scathingly funny reinterpretation of The Ten Commandments. They are The Penn Commandments, and they reveal one outrageous and opinionated atheist’s experience in the world.

What did you love best about God, No!?

There is nothing funnier than Penn, telling his own story. He is loud, rude and outspoken and doesn't pretend to be anything else.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Penn is the only character.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The story about the love his family had for each other.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Sister told a group of Penn's friends that there were no circumstances under which she would ever betray any member of her family. That defined unconditional love.

    Any additional comments?

Penn is loud and opinionated, an outspoken atheist and unwilling to put up with what he perceives as crap from anyone.

Winner of the 1961 Hugo Award for Best Novel and widely considered one of the most accomplished, powerful, and enduring classics of modern speculative fiction, Walter M. Miller’s A Canticle for Leibowitz is a true landmark of 20th-century literature—a chilling and still-provocative look at a postapocalyptic future.

What made the experience of listening to A Canticle for Leibowitz the most enjoyable?

I had read this book a long time ago and was always impressed by the author's grasp of the essential destructiveness of humans. Listening to this was a refresher on the bleak possibilities in a post-nuclear holocaust future. A morality tale, well told.

Who was your favorite character and why?

This was not a book of characters, so no one stands out. It was a book of circumstance and plot.

Have you listened to any of Tom Weiner’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    No

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    Will we never learn?

The sand-blasted world of Arrakis has become green, watered, and fertile. Old Paul Atreides, who led the desert Fremen to political and religious domination of the galaxy, is gone. But for the children of Dune, the very blossoming of their land contains the seeds of its own destruction. The altered climate is destroying the giant sandworms, and this in turn is disastrous for the planet's economy.

What made the experience of listening to Children of Dune the most enjoyable?

Although I have read (and re-read) the entire Dune Saga several times, this is an entirely new way to experience it. I think that the continuity of performance is quite good among the books I have listened to. I am gaining a whole new appreciation for this series by listening.

Have you listened to any of Scott Brick and Simon Vance ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

The continuity of performance among the Dune books is quite good.

Here is the novel that will be forever considered a triumph of the imagination. Set on the desert planet Arrakis, Dune is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Maud'dib. He would avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family and would bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream.

Would you listen to Dune again? Why?

Absolutely! Not only is it one of my favorite Sci-Fi series, listening added another dimension to my appreciation of the intricacies of the character relationships.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Duncan Idaho, but that's because the character develops in the later Dune Saga Series.

What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

(Ignoring the bad grammar in the question)...I don't have to add the voices in my head or substitute those from the movies and mini-series. I get to concentrate more on the intricacies of the plot.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Films were made of this book, mostly inadequate (but I watch them anyway) because it is really too complex to file...unless you're Peter Jackson with an unlimited CG budget and the guts to use it.
Tagline: Dune. As it should have been.
