I thoroughly enjoyed both the story and the narrator. The story was really well thought out, funny, adventurous and it had great timing. The cast of characters were all very original and interesting and it was simply a pleasure to listen to.
I love adventure stories and this one was a geniune page-turner. The characters were all different and most of them were so original and quirky. I really loved this book and was rather sad when I'd finished it. I'm a fan of steampunk, zeppilins and mad science, but the Foglios really nailed steampunk. The story was light-hearted, but full of danger and humor, with fast-paced action and really interesting backgrounds and mad science inventions. The Foglios have created a marvelous world with their story and characters.
Angela Dawe did a simply awesome job of giving unique voices and accents to all her characters. She really amped up the humor with her voice characterizations. She definitely added to the enjoyment of the story beyond simply reading the book.
Definitely, but my life is too busy for that. I listened to it every chance I had.
Just a wonderful story with a great, very talented narrator. I've listened to both books now, and am anxiously awaiting the third installment.
This book is so full of clichés, and the narrator was so poor, I didn't even bother to finish listening to this book. Honestly, it was that bad. Only very rarely will I quit an audiobook, but this one was simply too painful to continue. This was my first James Rollins book, but I won't spend money on anything he's written again. I've found the rating on Audible to trustworthy, so I've no idea how this book got a four star rating. Beware!
It was full of clichés and every ten minutes the characters were in life threatening situations that they miraculously escape again and again and again and ... you get the picture. The characters were carboard cut-outs, and there were so many history lessons couched as absurdly unnatural dialogue, it was honestly painful to listen to.
I've been so impressed with the narrators that Audible chooses; John Meagher's poor performance really stands in sharp contrast to other Audible narrators. His voice characterizations all sounded similiar, and his affected accents were very poor. His narration voice was frankly irritating. Almost anyone else would have been an improvement. I'm not trying to be mean or nasty, but honestly, this book was poorly done.
I'm afraid not. I love books and good stories, but this one simply did not live up to Audible standards.
