  • Miracle Cure

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 27 mins)
    • By Harlan Coben
    • Narrated By Scott Brick
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

They’re one of the country’s most telegenic couples: beloved TV journalist Sara Lowell and New York’s hottest basketball star, Michael Silverman. Their family and social connections tie them to the highest echelons of the political, medical, and sports worlds - threads that will tangle them up in one of the most controversial and deadly issues of our time. In a clinic on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, a doctor has dedicated his life to eradicating a divisive and devastating disease. One by one, his patients are getting well.

Mary says: "This is an old book"
    "This is an old book"

Though the publication date of this book is 2011, it was actually written 20 years ago. I am a big Harlan Coben fan, of his books, now. I am frustrated that I dumped a book credit on an old, not very good book. Caveat emptor on Audible. This has happened to me before. I need to get in the habit of checking other sources for the truth about these books.

Harlan has honed his skills greatly over the years and I would recommend any of his Bolitar books.

  • The Edge of Normal

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 31 mins)
    • By Carla Norton
    • Narrated By Christina Delaine
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In many ways, Reeve LeClaire looks like a typical 22 year old girl. But Reeve is anything but normal. 10 years ago, she was kidnapped and held captive. After a lucky escape, she's spent the last six years trying to rebuild her life, a recovery thanks in large part to her indispensable therapist Dr. Ezra Lerner. But when he asks her to help another girl rescued from a similar situation, Reeve realizes she may not simply need to mentor this young victim - she may be the only one who can protect her from a cunning predator who is still out there, watching every move.

Bette says: "Story & Narrator GREAT"
"I enjoyed the book. But the production was awful."
Would you try another book from Carla Norton and/or Christina Delaine?

yes, the story was strong. But not the narrator.

What did you like best about this story?

    Original story.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Christina Delaine?

anyone. Between the baby voice of the young teenager and the extreme swings in volume between whispering and yelling, I almost returned the book. It was a hard listen.

Was The Edge of Normal worth the listening time?

  • The Beautiful Mystery: A Chief Inspector Gamache Novel

    • UNABRIDGED (13 hrs and 35 mins)
    • By Louise Penny
    • Narrated By Ralph Cosham
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

No outsiders are ever admitted to the monastery of Saint-Gilbert-Entre-les-Loups, hidden deep in the wilderness of Quebec, where two dozen cloistered monks live in peace and prayer. They grow vegetables, they tend chickens, they make chocolate. And they sing. Ironically, for a community that has taken a vow of silence, the monks have become world-famous for their glorious voices, raised in ancient chants whose effect on both singer and listener is so profound it is known as “the beautiful mystery.”

Sparkly says: "Engaging, entertaining, and heartbreaking."
    "I miss Three Pines too!"
What made the experience of listening to The Beautiful Mystery the most enjoyable?

I share the feelings of a few of the reviewers. I miss the characters and the stories of Three Pines! This is a different book for Louise Penny. One of the reasons, for me, that Louise Penny's stories are so engaging is her rich character development. I cared about Ruth's duck! Also, her ability to develop the town of Three Pines into a place I'd really love to visit, were it real.

I guess the law of averages would start to go against yet another person dying in such a small town. But, as a fan, I would love to see those characters come back some day. If you're just starting, go back and read them in order.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes it was an engaging book.

Have you listened to any of Ralph Cosham’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

    Ralph Cosham was fine.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

    Monks run amok.

    Any additional comments?

    Still a Louise Fan.

  • Backfire: FBI Thriller #16

    • UNABRIDGED (11 hrs and 42 mins)
    • By Catherine Coulter
    • Narrated By Jim Meskimen, Deanna Hurst
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

San Francisco judge Ramsey Hunt, longtime friend to FBI agents Lacey Sherlock and Dillon Savich, begins the murder trial of Clive and Cindy Cahill only to have federal prosecutor Mickey O’Rourke, known for his relentless, aggressive style, suddenly turn tentative and distracted. Hunt suspects that something is very wrong — and then O’Rourke goes missing, and Judge Hunt gets shot in the back.

Amazon Customer says: "Still great at 16."
    "Hideous narration"

Especially the adults trying to do baby voices - couldn't be worse. I won't finish the book for that reason. I just can't listen to this.

  • Deliver Us from Evil

    • UNABRIDGED (14 hrs and 5 mins)
    • By David Baldacci
    • Narrated By Ron McLarty
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

In South America a 96-year-old man of great wealth reads a book late one night and an hour later he lies dead in his bed, the secrets of his past starkly revealed. Six months later another mystery man lies dead at the bottom of his pool in a villa in Provence. This time, however, there's a witness at the scene: Shaw, the shadowy operative from The Whole Truth who barely escapes with his life.

Eva Gannon says: "Why Not Five Stars?"
"Is this really a Baldacci book?"

If someone gave me this book and asked me to id th author, never in a million years would I have picked David Baldacci. I am a huge fan. But he really phoned this one in. Cliche after tired cliche. "Tipping point" - really? I used to buy his books sight unseen. His books are usually more intelligent. This was a huge disappointment.

  • A Prisoner of Birth

    • UNABRIDGED (16 hrs and 24 mins)
    • By Jeffrey Archer
    • Narrated By Roger Allam
    • Whispersync for Voice-ready

One evening, Danny, an East End cockney who works as a garage mechanic, takes his girlfriend up to the West End to celebrate their engagement. He crosses the path of Spencer Craig, a West End barrister tipped to be the youngest Queen's Counsel of his generation. A few hours later Danny is arrested for murder and later is sentenced to 22 years in prison.

Ant the Limey says: "His best since before he went to prison"
    "Read Dumas instead"

At least the author freely admits lifting from Dumas. If you've read The Count of Monte Cristo, you've read the far superior version of this story. Don't bother.
