I've been an Audible junkie from way before it was cool.

In the words of the Buddha, the four foundations of mindfulness (the four satipatthanas) are "the direct path for the purification of beings, for the surmounting of sorrow and lamentation, for the disappearance of dukkha (suffering) and discontent, for acquiring the true method, for the realization of Nibbana." Within the quintessential discourse called the Satipatthana Sutta, we find the Buddha's seminal teachings about the practice of meditation.

That the first track is actually from the 6th lecture I believe, before the actual series begins on track 2.

And, well, that's not really a negative thing to say, right? Just a shout-out for a little IT intervention, I suppose.

Regardless, Joseph Goldstein should be a core component to your Buddhist lecture library in that he strikes the balance between very technical and very loving/open with a sincerity that you can appreciate - if you are ok with slow paced, careful formulations of words.

Probably not for those seeking fast injections of mental calm and assurances from Deepak Chopra, Dr Phil, or Eckhart Tolle.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. Practical explanations of how consciousness arises, along with the consciousness of dukka. Walks you through being mindful of the whole thing.

What does Joseph Golstien bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

    Sincerity.

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

People who would enjoy 7 hours of encouragement to think more positively to resonate with the universal wisdom of God (your subconscious). This book is replete with unreferenced anecdotes that aren't even framed as arguments, but it is one mystical riff endlessly regurgitated in what sounds like a 2am infomercial promising you power, riches, and more virility.

Has The Power of Your Subconscious Mind turned you off from other books in this genre?

Absolutely. There is no integrity in this genre if this is a best sellar. Not even pop-pyschology, not even pop philosophy...pop cliches, and imprecise, ambiguous language, always delivered with comic hyperbolic claims.

Have you listened to any of Jason Culp’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

The performance is strong. He was working with utter tripe. He didn't get to steak, but maybe we got to sweet breads.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Anger that I lost a credit. Sadness that this is considered a best seller. Disappointment that I did, indeed, suffer through every second hoping we'd get past the same story told over and over again. I swear, sometimes I feel like the author wrote a chapter forgetting that he already wrote all of it in the previous chapter.
